Santa Clarita Valley Woman Gets 1-Year Sentence For Animal Cruelty

A Santa Clarita Valley woman arrested on animal cruelty charges in February was sentenced to one year in county jail and three years of formal probation. Desiree Lenore Martinez, 41, of the 23200 block of West Avenue D, was arrested by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies Feb. 10, after Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies and Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control officers responded to a service call. Deputies discovered a small pitbull mix inside the Martinez’s residence. On Feb. 9, Martinez choked the dog with shoelaces and hit it in the head with a rock, according to Deputy District Attorney Lyle Riggs, who prosecuted the case.
