Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley 22 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita all this time is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood. She was an Army ‘brat’ who moved every two to three years. Consequently, she has lived in many states and even spent three years in Europe.
She has many loves: reading, crafting, laughing, Christmas, and her family. Connie and John have three grown children: Tricia, a mother of four living with her family in Utah; Maria an elementary school teacher; and Daniel, a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserves.
Connie first came to KHTS through Daniel’s friendship with Jeri and Carl Goldman’s son, Ryan. The two boys were friends from JROTC and Cross Country at Valencia High School. When an opening came up at KHTS Jeri called Connie. Connie, after years of volunteering at her children’s schools/PTAs/booster clubs, accepted the job. Contrary to what her son, Daniel, said to his fellow Marines at Boot Camp, “I think my mom took my job!” She did not take ‘his job’. Daniel had been working as board-op for the station when he went into the Marines. Connie started out at the station part-time, manning the front desk.
She doesn’t agree with Carl’s title of her being “Queen of Restaurant Row”, but she certainly can’t fault a job that allows her to talk about food and the Valley’s restaurants as part of the station’s Restaurant Row program.
Connie says the best thing about her job at KHTS is that she is never bored. “If I’m not smiling, Carl is sure to ask why, just before giving me a mind-boggling project. Jeri is always looking for ways to make me feel valued. Everyone pitches in to get the job done. Sales staff have been known to go to the take pictures of scenes like the emergency landing of a plane on the I-5 and the Magic Fire. KHTS works hard to keep our valley informed. Between the vibrant, talented people I work with, the varied customers and guest coming through the door, throw in a valley-wide fire or other emergency, and who could be bored?!”
One of her jobs is to give mini-tours to scouts and other interested groups. Although she knows that the little scouts like the production room with all the sound effects, especially the toilet flushing, she is sure to point out the need and importance of having a true Home Town Station. “Whether it’s 4th grade book reports, high school football, local traffic, talk shows or emergency situations that require local reporting, KHTS AM-1220 is an integral part of our community and I’m glad to be a part of it. Besides, the DJs will take my request to play the Beatles birthday song for my husband or play Shania Twain’s ‘Still the One’ for our anniversary – gotta love that!”
