California Credit Unions Offering $10,000 In Scholarships To Santa Clarita Students

The California Credit Union is set to offer $1,000 scholarships to 10 students in the Los Angeles area including those in Santa Clarita through the Student Scholarship program, officials said Friday.

Participants eligible to participate are high school seniors and community college students transferring to a four-year university who maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0, said Mariam Nasiry, senior school and community development officer with the California Credit union.

Selection criteria include academic performance, school or community involvement, a letter of recommendation and an essay submission.

Besides having good grades and written a good essay, the credit union also looks for students who have overcome challenges and struggles within school, Nasiry said.

“I picked a gentleman from Golden Valley who got hurt his sophomore year playing football and missed half the year from pain,” Nasiry said.

The Golden Valley student who Nasiry selected went on to the final and won the scholarship.

However, there are students have won the scholarship who have not had a compelling story.

The credit union is set to award 20 scholarships of $1,000, 10 in the Los Angeles area and 10 in the San Diego area to students who are motivated in their academic endeavors, active in their schools and contributing to their community, dedicated to giving back to others through their participation, service and volunteer work.

Submission of an essay and letter of recommendation are meant to provide a testament to the character and abilities of the student applicant.

Those interested in applying for the scholarship have until March 16, 2020 to have their paperwork submitted.

If chosen, the Credit Union is set to show up to the Senior award night and present the check to winning students, Nasiry said.

  1. 10 (ea) $1,000 “scholarships” gets them favorable ink in dozens of local papers. Seems like a publicity stunt.

Give ’til it hurts or you’re not doing it right.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
