‘Celebrating All Diverse Cultures’: Golden Valley Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

During National Hispanic Heritage Month, Golden Valley High School students are celebrating the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States throughout September.

Golden Valley administrators have come together to implement assignments and activities to recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, “highlighting the joy, despite the challenges we face.”

“I enjoy doing new activities in (DMA) for Hispanic Heritage Month,” said Madison Hedlund, a Digital Media Arts (DMA) 2 student at Golden Valley High School. “It’s valuable because Hispanic students get to embrace their culture in the class. Also, others get to learn about Hispanic heritage, whether it be learning about Dia de Los Muertos or getting to play Loteria.”

The practical arts department has collaborated with other teachers in the Hart District as well as involved student choices to implement a series of engaging activities including:

  • Cooking Hispanic foods in Culinary
  • Designing Dia de los Muertos calaveras in Photoshop in Digital Art
  • Designing loteria tablas in Adobe Illustrator during Digital Art 2
  • Designing a scavenger hunt around campus with Latin(x) people/images in respective pathways around campus with trivia questions in Computer Science
  • Designing and printing posters to promote Hispanic Heritage Month in Graphic Design
  • Promotion of events on Golden Valley TV celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in Video Production

Practical Arts Department Chair and Digital Media Arts teacher Janel Richardson from Golden Valley kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month in her classroom with a game of Loteria, a traditional game of chance, similar to bingo.

“I had never played Loteria before so I thought it would be fun for all of us to play together to really get a feel for what they were going to design and what it is used for,” Richardson said. “The class lit up with excitement and friendly competition.  It was a blast and definitely a new tradition I will start doing in my own home.”

The activities have not only created a fun classroom atmosphere, but also allowed students to appreciate the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the culture of the United States.

“The main takeaway I want to see in these activities is seeing students embrace and celebrate all diverse cultures,” Richardson said.
