Mayor Smyth Addresses Protests — June 2, 2020
On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.
Our first guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth provides an update on the variance he requested to open Santa Clarita sooner than other parts of Los Angeles county, and if the city will be able to proceed with that. Mayor Smyth also talks about what the city has been able to do to help advise businesses on how to reopen in the safest way possible. Mayor Smyth talks about how they have been able to see what cities, businesses, and restaurants around the country have done so they can draw ideas from those places and take the best ideas and put them together. Mayor Smyth also takes time to talk about large and small fitness businesses and gyms, and how their blanket closures has been severely harmful to places such as martial arts studios, dance studios, and other more specific forms of fitness. Matt asks Mayor Smyth about how Santa Clarita is prepared to handle any potential violent protests or looting that could arise from protests in the name of the recently killed George Floyd in Minneapolis. Mayor Smyth shares appreciation for the peaceful protesters and how their demonstrations conveyed their message without elevated violence. Mayor Smyth addresses the video clip referencing another protest on Thursday in Santa Clarita, and he talks about what is true and not true about what the video says. Mayor Smyth reiterates that the city is prepared for any possible scenario, and that he and his team are focusing on this issue with the same diligence they have handled the outbreak of Covid-19. Listen to a very important update from the Mayor in the first segment of the first hour of the podcast.
Matt spends some time addressing the social unrest, protests, and riots in the name of George Floyd who was killed in custody of Minneapolis police. Matt talks about how Santa Clarita has done an amazing job of taking stand, making their voices heard, and keeping peace with those around them. Matt encourages everyone to seek to understand before anything else. Matt also shares quotes from numerous luminaries on the killing of George Floyd, and how we can make a change for the better in the wake of recent events. Listen to Matt talk about George Floyd in the second segment of the first hour of the podcast.
Our next guest on the show is Debbie Dole, Public Relations Officer for the Assistance League. Debbie talks about how the Assistance League was founded, and how in October of 1988 the idea was born to bring a sector of the national Assistance League to Santa Clarita. The following year, the Assistance League was officially established in Santa Clarita and has been changing lives ever since. Debbie shares the mission statement of the Assistance League, and how that has helped continue to guide through these challenging times. With more people in need than ever, Debbie and everyone at the local chapter in Santa Clarita has been working incredibly hard to get help to the people that need it. The Assistance League uses city data and research to discover the areas in Santa Clarita that are most in need, and they use that data to help guide them and make impactful decisions. Debbie talks about the partnership the Assistance League has with Old Navy clothing stores, and how they are able to put their resources together to allow students and their parents to go shopping for new clothes. Debbie shares more information about the various programs and forms of help the people at the Assistance League are able to give to the community such as the eye care for kids program that helps kids get free eye exams, lenses, and frames for cost-free glasses. To find out more about what the Assistance League does or to find out how you can donate to the amazing non-profit organization, check out their website by clicking here. They are planning to reopen and resume accepting donations on June 14 and they could not be more excited. Listen to Debbie’s full interview during the first and second segments of the second hour of the podcast.
Our last guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about how to talk to children about these difficult topics that are arising in the news. With protests over the killing of George Floyd at the focal point of the news cycle, children might ask questions that require a well-thought out, sensible response. Kristina talks about how parents can get in the right mindset so they can best answer their children’s questions, and how to help their kids learn while limiting their exposure to information and videos that are not age-appropriate. Listen to Kristina’s advice in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.
About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:
“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.
We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.
It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.
Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
