Update from Mayor Smyth — May 26, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth calls in to the show to talk about how he and his team have been continuing their fight to reopen Santa Clarita. Early on, Mayor Smyth had been pushing for Santa Clarita and other areas in Los Angeles county outside of Los Angeles city to reopen faster. With the majority of cases residing in Los Angeles, the Mayor wants to reopen Santa Clarita due to the positive progress SCV has made in preventing the spread of Covid-19. Mayor Smyth and his team are waiting for a final pair of votes to come in that will determine if Santa Clarita can reopen their retail stores, and then progress from there. The Mayor does a great job of explaining how LA County, the state of California, and the federal government are interacting with one another, and how that can both hurt and help the process. Mayor Smyth gives another extremely informational update on what Santa Clarita is doing to reopen while keeping people safe. Listen to his full interview in the first and second segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Tony Watson, Big T, and he calls in to liven up the show for a bit. Tony and Matt talk about World War I and II and what was being invented at the time. Tony shares a wealth of history knowledge with the listeners, and gives everyone a reminder to call a veteran, a current soldier, or a loved one that has served for our country and tell them, “thank you.”

Our next guest on the show is Lou Esbin, Law Offices of Louis Esbin. Lou calls in to the show to talk about how the economy has been impacted, and how we can move forward as a country. Lou does a lot of work with the private sector, and he provides a great amount of advice people can use to help keep themselves afloat during this time. Lou stresses the importance of “needs, wants, haves” and how paying attention to what you need, have, and want is always a surefire way to keep yourself on the right financial track. Listen to his full interview during the first segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about how to approach someone who may need therapy. This conversation can be very challenging to have with someone, and Kristina talks about how you can approach it. Kristina also spends time talking about how important it is to continue the therapeutic process and finding the right therapist for you. Each person is different and might have to try two or three therapists before they find the right one. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
