3 Appliances That Increase The Cost Of Your Electricity Bill

Want to cut down your electricity bill?

Perhaps you have already visited many electricity comparison sites to find the best provider to get down your costs.

Just remember that switching to a good energy provider can only solve half of your energy problem. To address the other half, you have to look inward.

A report from Hawaiian Electric[1] shows that some appliances in our home consume more energy than they should.

Read on to learn more about them.

How much energy does an Australian home consume?

Energy is measured in kWh (kilowatt-hour). 1 kWh is equivalent to 1000 watts/h.

According to a report[2] from the Department of Environment and Energy, Australia generated about 261.4TWh of electricity in 2018.

If you are like most people, you may think that the commercial and industrial sectors are the only prominent consumer of energy.

However, new studies have found that Australian homes consume a huge chunk of energy every year.

An average Australian home consumes 19kWh per day and will spend about $2500 a year. Larger homes with heavy appliances will easily consume 50+ KWh daily.

In a year, they will spend about $5500 yearly.

Appliances that can double your electricity bill

Refrigerator

The fridge is one of the main consumers of electricity in Australian homes.

On average, they consume 30 to 200 kWh monthly.

The reason is that most homes still use fridges manufactured in the 90s or earlier that are energy-inefficient and may consume about 120 to 300kWh monthly.

Investing in brand new fridges will help cut down your energy bill, as they are energy efficient. Most new models on the market use no more than 70 kWh monthly.

Water heater

As can be seen in this report[3], the typical water heating system is responsible for 15% to 27% of the energy used in many Australian homes. The water heater is used in carrying out a plethora of functions in the home (showers, dishwashers, and washing machines).

The amount of energy a home will spend on hot water is linked to factors like the size of the water heater, the length of time the shower is used, the activity it is used, and the temperature it is set.

Regardless of the model of the water heater installed in your home, there are a few things you can do to reduce cost.

  • Reduce your shower time
  • Wash your clothes with cold water
  • Ensure that your hot water storage tank is well-insulated
  • Inspect your thermostat regularly. Remember that you don’t need water hotter than 500C

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier is now an essential home appliance for people living in humid regions. This appliance helps to reduce the water vapour in the air. People with a basement install dehumidifiers to reduce the growth of mold and dust mites.

Many of these individuals leave their dehumidifiers running for many days, thus increasing their electricity bill.

Here are some things you can do to prevent the appliance from wasting energy.

  • Opt for a model with a digital humidistat
  • Ensure that the humidistat is set at a reasonable number
  • Shut the doors and windows in the area where the appliance is working
