5 Fun Hobbies For Retirees To Pick Up

Entering your retirement years is a truly exciting and unique experience. After years of commitment to your career, you’re finally ready to enjoy some time relaxing, fixing up stuff around the house, and visiting with your fellow retired friends and family. But not having enough responsibilities or hobbies to do when you’re in retirement can make your sunset years less enjoyable than you’d pictured.

If you’re nearing retirement and don’t have enough things to fill your time, check out our list of 5 things to do when retired and bored:

1) Fitness

Without having to go through your daily routine, it can be easy to lose motivation when you retire. Getting into a healthy hobby is an excellent way to spend your time and preserve your health in your golden years. There are plenty of fitness plans that are designed for retirees—from group fitness classes to personal training sessions—there’s something for everyone! Here are a few ideas to help you find a workout routine that works for you.

  • Swimming and water aerobics: Water sports are some of the best exercises for seniors since water provides resistance, but isn’t as hard on the muscles as high-impact sports, like running. Many cities have local community swimming pools with budget-friendly memberships that support your active lifestyle without compromising your retirement savings.
  • Gym and personal training: If hitting the gym is more your style, you’ll be glad to know that as a retiree you’re eligible to get plenty of discounts, even on your fitness plan! There are even free gym memberships for seniors to encourage new retirees to jumpstart their fitness routine.

  • Yoga: If leaving your 9-5 isn’t enough stress taken off your shoulders, yoga is a great way to both decompress and get some exercise in. From healthy backs classes, to strengthening sessions, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of this ancient practice.

2) Arts and Crafts

When you’re years into your career, it’s hard to find the time to do things outside of work other than relax on your couch after a long day. So now that you have some extra time on your hands, why not take some time to express your creative energy through arts and crafts?  Here are some ideas to inspire your next masterpiece.

  • Take a pottery class: Creating your own pottery is a great way to learn to work with your hands and build something you can actually use. Many ceramics studios offer beginning pottery classes which is a great way to start learning.
  • Work part-time at a craft store: If you’re looking for a fun part-time job to keep your schedule filled after you retire, working at a craft store is a good way to make some extra money and use your creativity. You might get the chance to lead classes and you’ll likely get a discount on arts and crafts supplies for your own projects.

3) Volunteering

Volunteering is an excellent way to meet other retirees and do something nice for others. Choose a cause that you’re passionate about—the environment, people, healthcare, pets—and you’ll likely find an organization that matches your personal mission statement. You can use a volunteer database to find volunteer opportunities in your area. Here are a few resources to get you started:

  • VolunteerMatch.org
  • American Red Cross
  • United Way Worldwide

4) Travel

If you’ve had to put off traveling due to your career, retirement is the perfect time to pick up your travel guide, bring out your suitcase, and get ready to see the world. If you’re not sure where to begin your journey, check out these top destinations for retirees:

  • Canadian Rockies for sweeping views, national parks, and efficient ferry transit.
  • Ireland for its greenery, friendly locals, and rich history.
  • Sicily for street food, coastal views, and incredible architecture.
  • Costa Rica for its unique wildlife, active environment, and budget-friendly travel accommodations.

5) Gastronomy

Whether you’re passionate about food already or want to brush up on your culinary skills, learning about cooking is a productive and enjoyable way to spend your retirement. Take a cooking class or a food and beverage pairing course with your significant other or your fellow retired friends for a fun day outing.

Wrapping Up

Don’t let boredom rule your retirement years—try any one of these 5 activities and you’re sure to make these the best years of your life!
