6 Best Boating Lakes in California

Not only is California home to the largest entertainment industry in America, but home to some of the most extraordinary landscapes.

In fact, our lakes are any boater’s dream come true. Most people head straight towards the open ocean, spending their days on the beaches. Forgetting that in and around California are 45 large freshwater lakes where you can rent a boat for a day and make memories of a lifetime.

Just remember your California Boater Card.

Shasta Lake

If you’ve run out of things to do in Santa Clarita, head on down to Shasta Lake and rent a boat or bring your own. Imagine 33,000 acres of water surrounded by jaw-droppingly beautiful mountains. A long winding shoreline that has hidden hideaways for adventurers and peace-lovers alike.

Whether you want to spend your weekend showing off your watersport tricks or fishing for their 20 varieties of fish, all are welcome. But, for those who love a little bit of adventure and mystery, keep an eye out for Highway 99.

Lake Tahoe

What makes Lake Tahoe so special? Not only is it one of the world’s oldest lakes but there’s so much to do here.

You can tan on the beaches or go jet skiing. Or perhaps fishing and relaxing are more to your liking. Lake Tahoe has its secrets hidden in the mountains like St. Francis of the Mountains, Fleur du Lac, Vikingshlom, and the Lady of the Lake.

Be sure to check which boat ramps are open during the summer as there are closures due to lower water levels. All boats will go through a ‘Clean, Drain, Dry’ process to ensure no invasive species are spread in the area.

Clear Lake

Don’t worry, wildlife watchers and lovers of silence, you are not forgotten. If this is you, then Clear Lake is where you want to be.

With over 300 species of birds to find, it’s the ideal destination for bird enthusiasts.

If you are planning a family weekend to Clear Lake, watersports, kayaking, and tubing are all favorites of the lake. Plus, it hosts dozens of docks where you can hop off and explore. On Wednesday nights they have sailboat races you won’t want to miss.

Just remember to have your inspection sticker on your boat before you go.

Big Bear Lake

Known for its impressive fish, Big Bear is any fisherman’s dream come true. Home to rainbow trout, bass, bluegill, and catfish, you can spend your day getting lost in the water of Big Bear.

Despite its given name, it’s unlikely you will spot a Bear here. Long ago, the lake was crawling with grizzlies but today you are more likely to find critters like squirrels and rabbits.

If you’re into hiking, dock for a day and hike through the San Bernardino Natural Forest or explore Gold Rush Mining Adventures.

It can get quite crowded at Big Bear Lake, so if you are looking for somewhere more peaceful then make a turn at Jenks Lake instead.

Lake Havasu

If you’re here for the slow life, the scenic route with sunset cocktails, you’ve arrived. And it’s called Lake Havasu.

Renowned for its beautiful clear water that can be enjoyed year-round, Lake Havasu creates nooks of enjoyment for the whole family. Picnic areas, barbecue grills, and hidden coves make this the perfect place for fun family relaxation.

Consider renting a houseboat and enjoying a good book. Or if you are into spirituality and wellness, we suggest giving Topock Gorge a visit.

Mono Lake

Mono Lake is one of those mysteries of nature that cannot go unseen. This is one lake that is reserved for the enjoyment of the watchers. Motorized and non-motorized boats are allowed, however, the lake comes with a flurry of restrictions. This is a result of the salty/alkaline water and the fact that there are so many submerged obstacles.

Mark Twain once described it as the “solemn, silent, sail-less sea”. And so it is.

We suggest taking a slow float across the lake, taking in the scenery. But most of all, make sure you see the Tufa Towers. They are a wonder to behold.
