6 Things To Check Before Setting Off For A Long RV Travel

Having a break is essential for every individual and should be something we all aim to do. Although when discussing holidays most people think this means going abroad on an airplane, this is absolutely not the case. You can have a great amount of fun on a road trip with your friends and family when it is planned properly.

No one enjoys the thought of being stuck in a car for long periods of time, therefore, if you are planning to go on a road trip, doing so in an RV is ideal. This way you can travel for as long as you want whilst still enjoying high levels of comfort, similar to what you would experience in your own home. However, you should not have to be a mechanic to know that your vehicle will need a few checks before you go on a long trip.

In this article, we will advise you of six things to check before setting off for a long RV trip, so that there is less likelihood of you breaking down in the middle of the road and have your whole holiday ruined.

1. Run The Engine and Battery

Whether you are just renting an RV, borrowing it from a friend, or using your very own again after a very long time, you must run the engine for a while. Running the engine, just like in any other type of vehicle, will give you an idea if there is anything wrong with the vehicle. You can check for different issues, even simply from the way the vehicle sounds when the engine is on, as well as any particular smells. It is also important that you check the battery before you set off on your trip, as these are issues that can have you stranded in the middle of the road.

2. Check All the Lights Work

The lights in a vehicle are extremely important – you need to turn them all on and off and make sure they work all around the RV. This includes the brake lights. You do not want to lose visibility in the middle of the night due to poor light bulbs as this can also increase your chances of being involved in a road collision. Make sure that everything works as it should, and if not, replace the light bulbs promptly before your travel.

3. Check The Tyres

The tires of a vehicle are extremely important, as poor tires can cause it to skid and you to lose control over it. If you want your road trip to go as smoothly as possible, make sure that you check the tires of your RV. RVs require a specific type of tires, specifically approved for RVs. Not everyone understands this but it is important you do so that you can make the appropriate checks – failure to do so can result in split tires at the seams. You also need to check the tire pressure before you head off. Bringing your own air compressors on your road trip is a smart move so that you can pump air into your tires if this is required during your journey. Do not neglect your tires and double-check them properly in order to avoid you being involved in an accident.

4. The Inside is Just as Important

We have been discussing checks that you would undertake on the outside of the RV, however, the inside is just as important to check. Make sure that you go in and check that everything works as it should. Can you flush the toilet? Will you be able to cook? You do not want to find out about these issues when you are on your way to your destination. A very important check to make is to ensure the smoke alarms work inside the RV, in the case of a fire.

5. Make Sure You Have Insurance

Insurance will protect you from most issues and ensure that you are covered. You need to make sure this is in place before setting off in your RV. If you are renting a vehicle, insurance should come included, although you should always check what this entails specifically.

6. Consult with a Professional

It is okay if you feel overwhelmed and do not know exactly how to make the appropriate checks on the RV. You can contact a professional to come with you and ensure that all the checks are done. Doing this may be costly, but it will also reduce the likelihood of issues developing down the road.

RV at Night

If you are planning to travel on an RV, it is vital that you ensure it is safe to drive. Ensure that you make the checks discussed above before you head off on your road trip, this way you will be safe and more likely to enjoy yourself.
