Bicycle Safety Tips For The Road

Given the number of bicycle accidents in Los Angeles, the odds are fairly great that if you ride a bicycle on the road alongside motor vehicles, you’re going to get into an accident at some point. Furthermore, you’re also likely to be injured as a result of the motor vehicle vs. bicycle accident because, after all, any vehicle that hits a cyclist is going to deliver more damage than it receives. For this reason, it’s critical to take safety precautions whenever you ride your bike on the road and around automobiles.

Equip Yourself

The first step all bicyclists should take toward rider safety is to equip themselves with the right gear. Of course, you’ll need a high-quality bike that’s suitable for road riding. Not all bikes are meant to be ridden on the road, so be sure you have one that is. You also need a helmet that is properly rated for adult use. Every helmet is different, so be sure to try on one before you buy it to make sure it fits correctly and will provide you with the right protection.

Additionally, you should have a light on your bike and helmet, a lock, a tire pump, bike tools, a can of fix-a-flat, reflective bike clothing, and a handlebar phone mount. While it may seem cumbersome to carry these items around, you’ll be safer and more prepared for emergencies if you do. Keep in mind that many bike accidents occur while a rider is on the side of the road trying to repair their ride. Make sure you have the right tools to do it quickly.

Know the Rules

There are different rules for bicycles on the road than for motor vehicles, and you’re responsible to know those rules when you ride in traffic. Be sure you know the hand signals that let drivers know your intentions to turn or merge and always use them. Bicyclists should always ride in the same direction as the traffic flow in a designated bike lane, if there is one. If there is no designated bike lane, you’ll need to ride at the furthest right of the road, just off the shoulder.

Obey all traffic rules and signs that apply to both drivers and cyclists. For instance, many cyclists do not stop at stop signs because it’s inconvenient to get started again. However, this is a violation and you could be cited for not stopping (check local bike laws to verify this rule, since some jurisdictions may allow cyclists to roll through stop signs). As you ride, be predictable. Don’t weave in and out of traffic or make sudden moves that could be difficult for drivers to counteract.

Check Your Bike

Always make sure your bike is in top condition before you ride. This means you should inspect your brakes, tires, and gears before pedaling off into traffic. You don’t want a part to fail you when you’re riding alongside motor vehicles, when a broken bike could put you in danger of getting hit or run over. Have your bike professionally inspected and maintained at least once a year.

Conclusion

Bicycle riding is becoming a more popular mode of transportation in big cities where traffic is congested. However, if you don’t know the basic cyclist safety rules, you’re putting yourself in great danger when it comes to riding around automobiles. Taking basic precautions could save your life.
