Can The LA Dodgers Go Back-To-Back In 2021?

In 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers won their seventh World Series, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 in the MLB’s highly-anticipated season-ender. Now, many expect Dave Roberts’ team to reach the sport’s pinnacle again and equal the New York Giants’ number of World Series Championships.

The LA Dodgers still have some way to go if they wish to turn their dream of being the most successful MLB franchise into a reality. To date, the New York Yankees have 27 titles to their name, but they haven’t won the World Series since 2009. The Yankees are the last team in MLB history to win back-to-back titles, clinching three consecutive trophies between 1998 and 2000. But can the Blue Crew replicate that dominance in 2021? Well, let’s consider their chances.

Chasing an Unrivaled 21st-Century Achievement

LA Dodgers fans had to wait 32 years to claim the World Series title for the seventh time, and many predict that they won’t have to wait as long for an eighth crown. Because of their recent success, it’s unsurprising that a handful of experts envisage Roberts’ team lifting the trophy once again this year. One writer in The Guardian states that the Dodgers have unrivaled depth within their roster, and a shorter season will reduce their chances of suffering mental or physical fatigue.

While the LA Dodgers can’t match the New York Yankees’ number of World Series wins this year, they can become the first franchise to win back-to-back championships since the Bronx Bombers. Thus far, only six teams have achieved this feat, and Roberts’ team has the tools to write their names into the history books.

During the off-season, the 19-time West Division champions added Trevor Bauer to their ranks. Although it’s still early in the 30-year-old’s career at the Dodger Stadium, the pitcher has hit the ground running, striking out nine batters on debut against the Colorado Rockies. Of course, top-level sport is unpredictable, and there are no guarantees that the LA Dodgers will win the World Series in 2021. However, there can be no doubts that they’re the current favorites. As of April 12th, the Blue Crew is priced at +350 in MLB odds to lift the championship at the end of the MLB season. They’ll face competition from the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres, but rival teams will have to play at the top of their game to stop Roberts’ team from going back-to-back.

Is This the Start of a Dynasty?

In seeking to defend their crown, the LA Dodgers got off to a slow start, losing 8-5 to the Colorado Rockies in the National League West. However, it didn’t take long for the Blue Crew to find their feet, winning the next three to claim their first series win of 2021. The addition of Bauer shows how serious Stan Kasten, the team’s president, is about creating a dynasty. Securing the 30-year-old’s services is a statement of intent, especially as the Padres also upgraded their playing staff during the off-season. This shows that the Blue Crew won’t rest on their laurels and allow their rivals to bridge the gap.

As Call to the Pen states, Bauer’s arrival is the type of move that a title-winning side should make. While it may not work out in the long term, it speaks volumes about the franchise’s collective desire to stay at the pinnacle and challenge for many more World Series championships.

After waiting 32 years to get back to World Series success, the current LA Dodgers roster will seek to cement their legacy over the coming years. In times gone by, the Yankees have had some iconic teams, with their 1998 side being one of the best sports outfits of all time. However, this year, the Blue Crew has the potential to become a great team, but this will only become proven in hindsight.

The Dodgers’ Time is Upon Us

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorites to win the 2021 World Series for a reason. With a world-class roster at Roberts’ disposal, the seven-time champions have the foundations to enjoy a period of sustained dominance for much of the coming years. While going back-to-back is a short-term goal for the Blue Crews, it may just be the start of a one-sided era.
