David Bolno On Family, Philanthropy, And Why Making A Mark Takes Many Shapes

For successful business management professional David Bolno, philanthropy and the idea of giving back to our families and communities benefits all of us in a wide range of different ways.

In a larger sense, philanthropy has always played a critical role in our communities because of the ways in which it can help instill lasting social change. Whenever a nonprofit organization that supports a worthy cause receives support, it means they can further their own mission for at least one more day. They can continue to make sure that children have lunches during the school year, or access to books and other educational materials that will make an impact.

But the mark that organization has left doesn’t stop there. Yes, in the short-term charitable giving may benefit a group of people for a day. But the lives of the majority of those people will be permanently altered. They will take that spirit with them into the world and hopefully follow the example they were on the receiving end of. That creates more philanthropy and the process repeats itself – sometimes for generations.

Some people actually consider philanthropy in general to be the foundation of society. Yes, we all want to be successful, and we all want to live with comfort and the peace-of-mind that only comes with knowing that we’re going to be okay. That our loved ones will have what they need and that we will generally be protected. But things run a fair bit deeper than that, too.

By supporting each other, we support our communities. We make it easier for them to contribute and make them better places to work and live. The importance of this is literally something that cannot be overstated.

The Internal Impact of a Community Focus

David Bolno knows that in the best possible situation, people would feel compelled to give back to their families and communities out of the kindness of their hearts. They would be motivated to do so for no other reason than because it is “the right thing to do.”

That sounds great, but Bolno is also a realist. Which is why he feels it’s so important to discuss some of the personal benefits that people get from community activism and charitable giving, too.

For David Bolno, one of the biggest benefits that he has received over the years from this type of focus has had to do with improving his social interactions. From a young age, being actively involved in his community helped him become more comfortable around people. It exposed him to points of view that he may not have otherwise had access to, and it helped him understand the world and his place within it. All this was hugely beneficial as he moved into the world of business management when his career began in earnest.

Other qualities that David Bolno feels he has honed as a direct result of this willingness to contribute and involve himself include increased self-confidence, improved competence, and overall life satisfaction. Again, any successful entrepreneur will tell you that these are all major cornerstones of a successful career in the making. Bolno has always made it a point to emphasize that he didn’t decide to make his mark on communities like the Los Angeles business community because he was expecting these kinds of advantages in return. Rather, they were a very welcome side effect.

Even on a day-to-day basis, charity work and giving back to families and communities can still be a major boost for most people. For starters, it helps distract you from the types of problems that you’re likely facing. Not that charitable giving and philanthropy should be used as an escape, but by taking some time in a day to focus on anything but yourself it does help put your own situation into perspective.

When you see first hand how difficult it can be for children who don’t have a stable home life or who may not even have access to a reliable food source, you may begin to realize that those problems you have aren’t as serious as you thought they were. Or, you’ll get a necessary reprieve where you can devote the energy you previously spent worrying towards a more healthy and stable cause. Regardless, all of this will go a long way towards reducing your stress levels – something that can help you feel better and likely live longer, too. It will also give you a critical sense of purpose at the same time.

In all the years that David Bolno has made philanthropy and charitable giving an important part of his life, one of the advantages that he has always been grateful for has to do with how it has helped him appreciate everything he has. Yes, it’s true that there are more important things in life than the number of clients you have, the amount of money you’ve made in a year, the job title you earned, or where you went to college.

But at the same time, these things are important, and sometimes it’s easy to forget that with everything going on in one’s personal and professional life. Remaining focused on philanthropy has helped him not forget to take a moment out of the day and value everything that he has and has achieved.

Every One of Us Can Make an Impact

In the end, David Bolno hopes that people realize there are many more ways to make an impact on a community than by simply writing a check. Yes, it’s true that some people make a sizable donation a few times a year and call it a day. It’s equally true that every little bit of financial support helps and nonprofits in particular truly appreciate it. However, if you lack the ability to do so, that doesn’t mean you can’t give back in other ways.

One of the most important ways to do precisely that involves volunteering. There are few things more precious than our time and devoting yours to a worthy cause is a perfect chance to give back. You could call your favorite nonprofit and see if they have any events coming up that they need help with, or do the same for a community service project.

You could also take the opportunity to mentor other people. You can take all of the knowledge and experience you’ve picked up over the years and share it with as many people as possible who are willing to learn. David Bolno does this with others in the Los Angeles business community on a regular basis.

If you’re lucky enough to have a significant following and a general influence in your industry, you should also use that platform for the benefit of all of us. Make a list of the causes you care about and use your influence to raise awareness about them and support them.

Indeed, “giving back” takes many forms and sometimes it’s less the product of any one major gesture and is more about a series of smaller ones that all add up to something significant. Regardless of the approach you take, the most important thing of all is that you take it. Take advantage of opportunities to put as much good out into the world as possible. Spread your message. Encourage others to do the same.

In the short-term, that’s how you take everything building up inside you and use it to make your mark on your desired community. When you also begin to realize that this impact will last for years to come, you’re looking at the most important benefit of all.
