Easy Ways To Hunt A Target Without Being Noticed

One of the most important factors in whether a hunt is successful or not is the hunter’s ability to remain undetected by their target. As every experienced hunter knows, staying unnoticed is easier said than done. Many animals have fantastic eyesight and hearing, and in particular, an incredible sense of smell. There are various ways to improve your chances of remaining undetected and maximize the potential for a successful hunt.

Here are four things to take into account to help you hunt a target without being noticed:

1. Know Your Prey

The first thing you must do in order to increase the chances of a successful hunt is to know everything you can about the target. Different animals have different methods of detecting a hunter as well as different weaknesses for the hunter to take advantage of. In order to exploit these weaknesses, preparation and knowledge are key. When hunting rabbits, for example, it is by making noise that they are flushed out of where they are hiding, whereas other animals need to be silently stalked. Sound knowledge and experience will tell you what the best tactics are to use depending on what game you are hunting.

2. Equipment

There is a wide range of equipment that you can buy which will help you to stay undetected. In particular, if you are hunting from a blind, there are various pieces of kit which can give you the upper hand. The first useful piece of kit you should consider buying are binoculars. A powerful pair of binoculars can enable you to spot a target from far away. A quick google search threw up this selection of binoculars which can be used even whilst wearing glasses. Being able to monitor your target’s movements long before it is within shooting range allows you to plan the best possible takedown. A good stand chair will allow you to sit comfortably in your blind, which will enable you to reduce your movements. Many animals have fantastic eyesight, especially when detecting unusual movements, and they are able to hear the rustle of clothes from great distances. The more still you can remain, the better chance you have of going undetected.

3. Camouflage

The most obvious way to try and remain undetected when hunting is to not be seen. If a hunter is able to successfully blend into the environment, then they can gain a crucial advantage which will allow the hunter to lay an ambush. One of the fundamentals of a successful hunt is the element of surprise, so staying hidden in order to get close to the target or to allow the target to come to you is vital. When considering your camouflage, try to blur the lines of your frame. A human outline is very distinctive and there are many hunting outfits available designed to alter the shape of your silhouette to confuse the eyes of the animal. Try to coordinate the print of the camouflage with the habitat. If you are hunting in a forest, for example, camouflage that incorporates more vertical streaks will blend in better with the trees. Likewise, the color of the camouflage should suit the environment. Greens and browns are best when hunting in the forest whilst sandy colors are ideal for hunting on desert plains or dry meadows.

4. Smell Is Everything

Many animals have an incredible sense of smell, many times more powerful than that of humans. White-tailed deer, the most commonly hunted animals in the US, have 800 times as many receptors in their noses than humans. Some studies have calculated the white-tailed deer’s sense of smell to be as much as 100 times stronger than ours and they can even detect how long a scent has been there for. The first thing to be aware of is the direction of the wind and any changes in air currents. In preparing for a hunt, it is vital that you don’t smell like a person. These days there are many soaps available that are formulated especially for hunters and hunting clothes which use no perfume and mask the smell of the hunter’s body. Brush your teeth with baking soda before a hunt as deer will easily be able to detect the distinct scent of minty toothbrush which will immediately alert them to your presence. Think of it as camouflage for the nose.

Ultimately the success or failure of a hunt usually comes down to who has managed to outsmart whom; the hunter or the prey. Many animals have incredible natural senses which give them an advantage but by following the above tips, you will boost your chances of remaining unnoticed and going home with the big prize in the back of your truck.
