Everything You Need To Know About How A Physical Assistant Can Cure You

If you have been the victim of an accident that resulted in a physical injury, then it is likely that you will need to undergo physical therapy sessions. Whether it is a sports-related injury, post-surgery rehabilitation, back pains, or any disabilities, physical therapy can help patients regain their physical functions and mobility. Licensed physical therapist assistants (PTAs) can help you throughout your journey to eventually recover and regain your strength. However, if you are unsure about what PTAs exactly do, we made a list of everything you need to know about how a PTA can cure you:

What do they do?

Let’s define the job for you. A PTA assists the licensed physical therapist in providing physical therapy services, which are all undertaken under the latter’s direction and supervision. In order to become licensed, all PTAs must graduate with an associate’s degree from an accredited PTA program. After graduation, PTAs have to pass the national licensing examination in order to become licensed in the state in which they intend to practice. Here are some examples of how PTAs can help in curing you:

1. Treatment planning

Although not all PTAs participate in the patient’s treatment plan, sometimes they are involved in the process. So if you’ve ever wondered to yourself, what does a physical therapist assistant do, then you should know that an important part of it is about helping the supervising physical therapist in each patient’s treatment plan in order to help patients regain their mobility and strength. Moreover, PTAs, together with the physical therapist, also have a say in planning the patients’ rehabilitation process.

2. Observe patients’ progress

PTAs are actually directly involved in their patients’ treatment from the very start. After becoming fully informed by the physical therapist on each patient’s history and case, PTAs are then responsible for observing their patients and their progress. Afterward, PTAs report to their supervising physical therapists on a regular basis about each patient’s progress.

3. Provide physical therapy techniques

In fact, PTAs can also provide a variety of physical therapy techniques to their patients. During each patient’s treatment plan, PTAs can provide patients with several techniques that will help them regain their mobility and their typical range of motion. Those techniques can include therapeutic exercise and massage, as well as electrotherapy and ultrasound.

4. Educate patients

Female DoctorPTAs are responsible for helping out their patients with all the information they could need. Whether it is explaining a treatment plan to their patients or any specific type of exercise, PTAs are always keen that patients accurately understand their treatment plan well. Moreover, several patients would require the use of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, and prosthetics, etc. So it is a PTA’s responsibility to teach them appropriate ways to use those devices, and how to move while using them, and how to prevent further injury. Moreover, they are responsible for educating patients and their families on the right exercises they need to do at home during their rehabilitation process.

Although there are many more responsibilities that PTAs undertake every day, those are their most common duties. All in all, PTAs do a great job of helping patients achieve their physical therapy goals and regaining their strength. So if you are in need of physical therapy sessions, those experts’ advice and knowledge will always be valuable.
