How To Dress Safely When Horseback Riding

Picking what to wear for horseback riding can be a challenge especially for beginners. But, it is vital that you always have safe riding attire as it could, quite literally, save your life!

Generally, horse riding is a fun and often rewarding sport but sometimes things get uncomfortable and accidents do occur. Falling off and getting injured is common. And even on a normal day, rubbing your legs by the saddle or the horse’s skin will result in unpleasant bruises. For this reason, having the right gear will significantly minimize the risk of injuries.

It doesn’t have to be expensive to dress for horseback riding. And, finding the right gear is quite easy. We’ve prepared some considerations to keep in mind for your horseback riding sessions.

Helmet

Finding suitable and comfortable clothing can be quite easy even from the local tack shop. But, a helmet is probably one item you want to be particular on. This is one item you might have to get brand-new equipment. This is because more often than not, used helmets come with unseen damage especially to the inner linings which could significantly compromise your safety.

Helmets come in different brands, colors, and even styles. There are Western and English styles as well as the latest sleek models popular for schooling and hacking. Be sure to get one that is not only attractive but comfortable as well. And more importantly, make sure the helmet you go for is SEI/ASTM certified.

SEI certification means that the helmet is specifically constructed for horseback riding sports and is well tested and inspected for this particular use. ASTM certification is done by the American Society for Testing Materials and ensures all products meet the international required technical standard. A combination of these two certifications is needed as helmets designed for cycling, skiing, among other sports are not safe enough for horse sports.

Make sure to fit the helmet when shopping for one. Shake your head and nod to ensure the helmet remains firm and secure on your head. And, get one with a comfortable and adjustable harness.

A good helmet will cost you over $50. And, if your family is also into horse riding, they’ll each need a helmet that fits them perfectly.

Jackets, Vests, and Shirts

You probably have a suitable sweatshirt or T-shirt you’re planning to wear. Just make sure to wear bright colors to enhance your visibility. Many equestrians prefer to have vests on especially when the weather is favorable. In a vest, there’s less restriction for your arms and shoulders.

If you live in an area with some frigid temperatures, get some winter coats that are specifically designed for such conditions. These coats provide some shoulder room and the gussets spread nicely over the saddle avoiding the clumsy tucking under it. And, they have some quite impressive reflective patches for visibility. If you plan to go for horseback riding, appropriate safety wear is needed. Be sure to head out to a horse show near you to observe what other equestrians are wearing. Notice, there are specific types of wear needed.

Pants

Whether it’s regular or one-time riding, two-way stretch tights are advised. They are not only comfortable but also come with leather seats and knee patches. These patches allow for more grip and the tights are made of durable fabric. For extra warmth, winter pants are made of fleece material.

Many beginners make the rookie mistake of riding in sweatpants or even jeans. But, you might want to avoid this as it makes you more susceptible to ankle or knee twists. And, riding pants provide the wind-breaking abilities and extra grip – something your sweatpants won’t provide.

For pants, they are quite inexpensive. And, you could save up money by getting lightly used ones or sewing a pair for yourself.

Boots

Boots are probably the most important safety consideration after a helmet. However, unlike a helmet, there are no official standards for boots. But, you might want to get a pair with 1-inch heels to avoid sliding through the stirrup.

While your hiking boots might be okay as well, they might not fit through the stirrup. Be sure to get a pair that is affordable, comfortable, and suitable for horseback riding. As long as the heels and the sole guarantee safety, you don’t have to get special “riding boots”. Great country boots from a suitable store will do. Or, something in your closet could work as well.

Taking care of yourself when horseback riding is important. Failure to have safe riding attire could result in serious injuries. Be sure to follow these tips to make your experience fun and safer.
