How To Learn Playing Drums When You Haven’t Got ’Em?

Having a drum set is a must for a professional drummer. But if you’re just beginning or learning, and you haven’t got your own set, how can you learn? It seems strangely good, but you don’t have to invest money at once into buying a set. There are less obvious but still efficient ways to practice drumming without it. Don’t forget to check out more detailed reviews for each category on simplydrum.com

Practice Pads and Other Replacements

That’s where motor skills grow. A practice pad requires less space and makes much less noise (if any), so you can place it even in your bedroom. It’s affordable and lightweight, and playing it lets you exercise the basic movement, feel the rhythm, and learn drum parts. It lets you even check yourself with a mirror and a metronome.

There are many available practice pads, and you can read more detailed reviews for them. If you haven’t got a practice pad, you can even use a pillow. It silences everything, so you can hit it like a maniac. Pillow sessions shouldn’t last long, but practicing it periodically does your muscles right.

Air Drumming

This zero replacement has its pros as well. You still practice your movements, but you have no place when the stick hits the drum. So you need to predict that collision point. In pillow exercises, you gain force, in air ones, you gain precision. Hey, you don’t even need actual sticks for that! You can replace them with an app like Air-Drummer, or kits like Aerodrums or Freedrum.

On the other hand, this only works when you have some solid experience of playing real drums. This lets you make your moves as close to actual drumming as possible.

Ground Drumming

The simplest exercise that most of us do is stomping your feet to the beat. Though it doesn’t seem serious, it really helps you feel the rhythm and trains the muscles in your feet and legs – just like a good pillow training does to your arms and shoulders. The greatest thing about this sort of training is that you can practice it virtually everywhere.

Drum Your Way Up

If you know of any other practices for training playing drums without an actual set, we’d like to hear about your experience. It will be interesting to us, as well as to other readers. We’d appreciate if you share this with your friends who want to start drumming. Don’t let the lack of a drum kit stop them! Inspiration is everything.
