How To Repair A Sliding Glass Door

If you have a sliding glass door installed in your home then you understand just how important it is. It allows your home to receive enough amount of air and sunlight. No matter how much care you put into handling the door, it will need repairs after some time. The most common problems that sliding glass doors face are the following:

  • Difficulty in sliding

A sliding glass door that is difficult for you to open by sliding may require replacement of its rollers. In some cases, the rollers may need to be realigned. You can follow these simple steps to fix your difficult to move sliding door:

  1. You can start the fixing by cleaning the bottom of the doors track. Make sure that you take out all of the debris, small and big. This will provide a smooth slide.
  2. Depending on the number of times you use your sliding glass door and the constant changes in weather, it may require the rollers of the door to be adjusted. You can use the adjusting screws located at the bottom of the metal door frame. Use them to raise or lower the rollers. Make the adjustments until the door can slide as you need it to.

If none of the methods have worked and your door is still not functioning properly. It may be time to replace the rollers of the door. As much as it is possible to do a DIY roller repair, it is not an easy task. In such a case you should hire a local area sliding glass door repair company to replace the rollers.

  • Wrecked hardware

Just like the other types of doors and windows, the sliding glass door also weakens over time. It is a normal occurrence for the hardware of a sliding glass door to require replacement. The things that may need replacement are the bumpers, guides tracks, wheels, rollers, keepers, strikes, locks, and handles. 

  • Broken glass

To repair the broken glass you first need to remove any pieces of it let on the door. You then need to take accurate measurements of the glass size needed for the door, Order the glass from your nearest store. Once you get the glass push it into place on the door while securing it firmly. Secure the glass and clean any dirty areas on the door.

  • Deteriorated seal
  1. Make the staples holding the seal loose with a screwdriver.
  2. Pull the staples from the door and pry it out carefully with a knife.
  3. Take out any staples or glue that remained behind.
  4. Follow the instructions to install the new weatherstripping.
  5. With the screws, secure the flange along the door’s edge.
  6. Glue the strips jamb-side with any plastic adhesive.
  7. Wipe any excess smudges or adhesive.
