Is Affordable Divorce Real? Let’s Figure It Out.

Can I get an affordable divorce? Many people have asked themselves this same question. You might think that it’s impossible because everything seems to be so expensive. Divorce is a billion-dollar industry, with $50 billion being spent annually on getting divorced. No wonder people think that an affordable divorce is impossible.

So is affordable divorce real? Let’s figure it out.

Divorce can be affordable; with a few tips, you will be able to get an annulment without spending a fortune.

Get a divorce without a lawyer

Did you know that it’s possible to get divorced without using a lawyer? By doing so, you will be able to save a lot of money. Most lawyers charge per hour, so if you had to use a lawyer for your entire divorce, then you could end up spending a lot of cash. On average a lawyer charges between $150-$250 per hour; some lawyers even charge up to $650 an hour, depending on their expertise.

How could you get divorced without a lawyer? Well, there are 2 ways.

Firstly, you could have a “do it yourself divorce.” This means that you will get your divorce papers online or at your local clerk’s office. You will then need to serve your spouse divorce papers. Once this has been done, you can then collect all your own supporting documentation and file your paperwork at your local family court. A DIY divorce is relatively easy if you have an uncontested case. This means that you and your spouse agree as to how you will split your assets and debts. This is also possible if you don’t have children or any other complications. If your case is straightforward and you and your spouse end your marriage amicably, a DIY annulment can be for you.

Secondly, choose an online divorce service if you want an inexpensive divorce. Many couples are choosing divorce over the internet nowadays. There is nothing easier than sitting at home and filing for a divorce on your laptop or computer. You don’t need to leave your house to see a lawyer, which means you save money.

You also don’t need to hire a babysitter to watch your kids, and this, in turn, means you save even more. Online divorce is easy, fast, and cheap. The company will send you all your divorce papers within 48 hours max.

You will then need to fill out your paperwork, and get your supporting documentation. Once this is done you can either file it yourself at your local clerk’s office, or the online divorce service could file your paperwork for you at an extra cost. On average, an online divorce can cost you between $150 and $299 in total. Some companies even offer lawyers on call, just in case you need some extra advice. If you do decide to use a lawyer, then they will charge you extra for their services. Using an online divorce company is the modern way to go and many couples are choosing this route because it is so affordable, quick, and easy.

You could also opt for mediation if you and your spouse can’t come to an agreement with regards to your annulment. Mediation is much cheaper than litigation. If you choose to go to court to fight it out, you are looking at spending a small fortune. Court battles can also be lengthy and emotionally draining. By choosing to use a mediator, your issues could be solved within as little as 3 days. Mediators work to find the best solution for both parties. They will help you and your spouse come to an agreement that works for both of you. Most mediators charge between $100 and $300 on average. Most of the time mediators can solve disagreements within a few hours. On average the cost of litigation is between $15,000 and $25,000. It’s also interesting to note that America has one of the highest litigation costs in the world. (https://www.classaction.org/blog/us-litigation-costs-ranked-as-no1-in-the-world)

Therefore if you would like to get a cheap divorce, try to stay away from litigation.

Another way to have an affordable divorce is by using legal aid. You can find out if any lawyers offer legal aid in your area. Call your city bar association, or search for legal aid divorce help on the web. These organizations provide help by offering no-cost or low-cost aid.

A paralegal is another way in which you can have an affordable divorce. They are much cheaper than using a lawyer. Paralegals can offer you the same kind of advice for much less. You could also shop around for different lawyers. Don’t just choose the first lawyer that you meet. By looking at a few different ones, you will be able to compare prices and find out what their fee structures are. By being organized and checking exactly where your money is going, you will be able to save money. Ask your lawyer for a breakdown of their fee structure. For example, ask if they charge call-out fees, or if they will charge you to send emails or make phone calls. By knowing a lawyer’s fee structure, you will be able to choose a lawyer that will suit your budget best.

When it comes to ending your marriage, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Life is already expensive; Therefore keep these tips in mind if you would like an affordable divorce because it’s really possible to have one.
