KHTS Features: From Spain To Santa Clarita: Leire Baztarrica Shoots For The Stars

Photography has been Leire Baztarrica’s hobby ever since she can remember. However, it is not until she settled in Los Angeles—and Santa Clarita, to be more precise—that she turned this passion into a successful career. One of Baztarrica’s latest projects has been the Glow Photo Studio, which she opened with Santa Clarita photographer Mindy Ruder, earlier this year. She has also recently started working on a creative project supported by a grant from her hometown in Spain. The project focuses on what immigrant women go through, including the feeling of otherness.

Baztarrica believes that as a photographer, she has a lot more opportunities in Los Angeles than she would have had in Spain. Photography expert from Reviewbox.es Alejandara Flores agrees. “It is hard to make a living in Spain out of photography, especially portraits and glamor shots,” she says. “Unlike in LA, where there are a lot of actors and the beauty industry is really developed, in Spain the market for fashion and editorial photography is just not there yet.”

Hailing from Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, Baztarrica traveled to the United States to work on an art project in Reno, Nevada, in 2015. She met her future husband during the trip, and the rest, as they say, is history. By 2017, she was married and living in Santa Clarita. This is also when her photography career started taking off. Today, she works on a variety of projects, however, most of her work is in the field of portraits, and commercial fashion and beauty photography. Over the years, she has worked for Will and Jaden Smith’s JUST Water and YouTuber Jimena Reno.

Baztarrica also offers a  “Model for One Day in DTLA” service through Airbnb, where clients can book her photography services for two hours. The one-on-one photo shoot experience usually takes place in landmark locations around the area. “I’m booked pretty much every week and it’s been a life saver for me, especially when I came to L.A. with no professional contacts. A lot of photographers don’t think it’s worth it to offer one-on-one sessions for a lower price, but I think it is because that means I get booked and work consistently,” Baztarrica recently told The Signal.

While moving from a small city in Spain to Los Angeles has not been without its challenges, things are definitely falling into place for Baztarrica. It seems that the move has paid off. “It’s very interesting work and I get to meet a lot of people from all around the world,” she says.
