Know What To Do To Lower The Cost Of Young Drivers’ Insurance

Not so long along ago, a few extra quid on your dad’s car insurance meant you could drive his car and enjoy the freedom of the roads and greater independence. It was a rite of passage. But now car insurance for young drivers is the most expensive car insurance. All drivers under the age of 25 have to pay an exorbitant amount. It’s not about covering the costs of replacing a young driver’s car if it’s stolen or damaged. The yearly cost of young driver’s insurance could buy three or four traditional first cars.

The high costs are driven by the assumption that all young drivers carry a much higher risk of causing damage or injury to others. Perhaps they do, but it makes learning to drive and becoming a fully insured driver, very expensive indeed.

Cost-Cutting Tips for Young Drivers

Often, such costs for young drivers’ car insurance are so ridiculous they render becoming a driver a distance dream. Cynically you could say, it’s a deliberate strategy to price high-risk young drivers off the road and out of the market. But all it has done is trigger a rise in drivers not being insured at all. But sometimes, being a driver is essential to travel to work, college or university, so it is important to find ways to lower the cost.

Shopping around is certainly a good thing to start with, as it helps you find better deals. Money Expert spoke to 1,200 car insurance customers and found that shopping around could save you £200 or even more right from the word go. You can find comparison sites where it is easier to compare packages side by side. Be sure to spend some time doing your research and you’ll be in a better position to decide.

Other than this, you can do another important thing, which is to add another driver to the policy.

Add Responsible Adults as Second Drivers

Adding an experienced and older second driver one would think increases costs but with some companies, premiums are reduced. It’s worth shopping around for group insurance. Perhaps it’s a token recognition that not all young drivers are reckless boy racers.

Here are some facts related to adding mature adults as the second driver to your car insurance:

  • Young drivers are considered high-risk drivers and this is the reason for their expensive car insurance but adding a second low-risk driver it reduces the average risk factor and thus decreases the insurance cost.
  • Low-risk drivers can be any adult but its a case of the older the better. The more mature adults are the lower the risk and therefore lower premiums.
  • Adults with good past driving history are better than just any low-risk drivers. A good no claims history lowers costs saving a good chunk of money.
  • The law does not discriminate drivers based on gender so both male or female adults can be added as the second driver.
  • The experience of the second driver is another important factor that impacts the cost of insurance cost.
  • Add only those adults as second drivers who are likely to drive your car at one point or other like relatives and friends.

So, be sure to keep these points in mind when looking for young driver’s insurance and you will end up cutting a better deal.
