NHL Legacies: Sidney Crosby

Sidney Crosby has done so much for Hockey since his first appearance in the NHL back in 2005. His achievements have been record-breaking, and with his newest record accomplished in February 2021, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind how this has affected the NHL player futures odds!

1,000 Games

Throughout all of the Pittsburgh Penguins history, no player has ever competed in 1,000 games. At least, that was true until 20th February 2021, when Sidney Crosby donned the yellow and black uniform for the 1,000th time.

There has always been a big target on Crosby’s back ever since he joined the Penguins. He was the first pick in the whole of 2005, which automatically made him the face of the Penguins. It also meant that he had to prove his worth as a first-picked player.

Of course, as time has gone by, Crosby is still in the game, and at the age of 33, he is still constantly considered as one of the best players on the ice.

Although the Penguins have only had one player reach the 1,000 games mark, many other teams have achieved it time and time again. So you might be wondering what makes this so special. Well, for Crosby, the journey has been rough.

Sidney Crosby’s talent has already been great, but he has received many injuries during his time on the ice, which led medical teams and coaches to believe he might not come back to play. With nearly 200 games missed, it’s a miracle that Crosby has made it to game 1,000 and still be playing his top form.

In 2011, Crosby suffered from a massive concussion. One opposing player smacked him in the face with the hockey stick, and another slammed into him right afterward, plummeting him to the ground. The shocking incident made people question whether he was too old to play anymore. Crosby shook that idea off, but we cannot ignore the amount of career-ending injuries he has endured.

In 2008, he achieved a high ankle sprain, forcing him off the ice for 29 games. In 2013 Crosby broke his jaw after Brooks Orpik gave him a slap shot to the face. And in 2014, Crosby was one of many players who were infected with the mumps, causing him to miss another 5 games.

Another concussion occurred in 2017, and a core muscle injury tore him away from 28 games in 2020.

With so many injuries to his name, the fact that he reached 1,000 games is unbelievable!

A Strong Start

Sidney Crosby is more than a long-time player and an unstoppable force. From the get-go, Crosby has shown himself to be a leader and a skilled player. As a first-picked player, we all knew he was going to do well, but he was far better than anyone could imagine.

In his first two seasons playing the NHL, Crosby scored 222 points. Not only that, but he won his first Hart and Art Ross Trophy. All of his talents were utilized by the coaches, and their balance and skill led Crosby to pull the team into their first playoff in 5 seasons.

Since that 2006 rise up the ranks, Crosby and the Penguins haven’t missed a single postseason.

When Crosby reached his third season, he was named Captain of the Penguins. He was just 19 years old and the youngest captain in NHL history. No one has beaten this record since, and the likelihood of it happening is extremely low.

Still the captain in the 2020-2021 season, Sidney Crosby is the longest-running captain in the whole league.

A Numbers Game

If you want to look at the numbers alone, the Penguins have reached four Stanley Cup Finals under Sid Crosby’s leadership, and they won three of them. One of the games led to Crosby earning the Conn Smythe Trophy for the Most Valuable Player.

By the time that Crosby reached game 1,000, he had scored 468 goals, helped with 810 assists for a total of 1,278 points! These numbers are so good that Crosby is currently the second-best all-time player!

One of his recurring triumphs is reaching the 100 point mark in a season, which he has achieved 6 times. Crosby has also never finished a year with fewer points than games played.

With all of these goals by his name, you should be expecting to see Crosby’s name near the top point scorer for the league every year. Crosby has even finished two seasons as the overall top point scorer. The first time was during his sophomore season in 2006 – 2007, where his total points were 120. The second was in the 2013 – 2014 season, where he tallied up 104 points.
