Riding Guide- Everything You Need To Know To Begin Cycling

Did you know that padded cycling shorts are a must for beginners? Read this article to learn more.

As a child, one of the first skills most of us learned was cycling. Since then, many have turned that into their hobby, while others have pursued it as a profession. Yet, many of us just can’t find the time to experience the adrenaline rush and joy we felt while riding a bike in our younger days.

Cycling has gained popularity, especially since the pandemic outbreak. People have started taking an interest in it. If you are a new rider, cycling can seem intimidating, but with practice and guidance, you will definitely be able to jump right back into cycling.

Whether you are a beginner, haven’t been cycling for a while, or an experienced cyclist, there are many things yet to discover and learn as a cyclist. Just remember, for you to become a pro, you need to be a beginner. So here are a few pointers to get you started.

Beginners Pre- Bike Riding Checklist

Before we can get into this checklist, your first order of business is to get yourself a bike that is a perfect fit for you. It will help if you familiarize yourself with the different varieties of bikes used for various purposes. The best way to do this is to go through a guide to buying a bike.

These guides will provide you with all the information you need, starting from the frame size to the amazing extra features. Once you have settled on the bike that’s perfect for you, just follow these simple tips to make your riding experience tremendous.

Dress the Part Before You Start

Before you hop on to a bike, you need to ensure that your outfit is appropriate for your ride. Padded shorts and helmets are essentials. In case of even the tiniest accidents, these can save you from massive injuries.

The weather is pretty unpredictable, and that is why you need to master the skill of layering while riding. This means you need to be prepared to warm up if it gets cold or cool down if the sun decides to shine upon you.

Adjust the Saddle Height and Riding Posture

Even though cycling is fun, doing it wrong can lead to serious injuries. To avoid such grievances, always check and adjust your saddle height.  If your saddle is too high, you might just strain your muscles and cause a tear; if your saddle is too low, you will not be able to extend your leg to full range and use that leg strength.

To know if your saddle is at the right position, check for a slight bend in your knee when your foot reaches the bottom of the pedal stroke. Also, ensure that your body posture is correct while riding. Generally, the rule is to have your handlebar screening you from the wheel hub while riding.

If you feel any discomfort or pain, please take some assistance from an expert and fix your bike riding posture.

Check Your Tire Pressure Before Riding Off

Having your tires inflated to the proper pressure is probably the most basic component of bike maintenance. Take a glance at the sidewall of your tires for the information. The tire manufacturer has a standard pressure range rather than a single static pressure. This allows you to modify the tire pressures depending on the weather.

Are you planning to take your bike for a spin in the rain? Don’t pump your tires too hard as the roads will be damp, and the risk of slipping will increase. If you are just riding to work on a hot sunny day, fill those tires up.

 Beginners Cycling Backpack

As you get paddling, you will realize that there are so many things you need to carry. So we have prepared a list for you of things you should have in your riding kit.

  1.   As you use up that energy in your body, you will start to get hungry and thirsty. Carrying things like water and snacks like protein bars (for a quick burst of energy), bananas, jelly beans, etc., will keep you pumped.
  2.   As you make small pit stops, you need to secure that bike, or it might just become someone’s sweet escape. Carry some extra locks and some light for the nighttime. This will keep both you and your bike safe.
  3.   If you get sweaty palms, that might get in the way. To have a better grip on your bike, wear cycling gloves or mitts.
  4.   If you stop at a store for a stopover, carry a fanny pack with some extra cash, your ID cards, and credit cards.
  5.   You might face a punctured tire or other minor issues. Carrying a saddlebag with some spare tools can do wonders.

 How to Ride the Bike

Now that you’re all set to go, all that is left to do is to wear that helmet and begin to explore. However, it’s best to keep a few things in mind. Be confident on the road – most beginners often tend to ride as close to the curb as possible. Do not practice this!

Often, people on the road will not see you or might try to overtake when there isn’t enough space between you and the other vehicle. Remember, there are others on the road as well, so treat them with mutual respect. Just learn how to use your gears and paddle at a steady pace.

Get Yourself a Bike and Hit the Roads Today

After a stressful pandemic and lockdown situation, there is nothing more refreshing than a bike ride either alone or with your loved ones. We all have to begin somewhere, so for the beginners out there, just be poised and begin the ride, one paddle at a time.

Be sure to tick all the boxes of the checklist mentioned above, and carry all the necessary items before you head on to an adventure.

Bon Voyage!
