So many people dream of being a professional singer, to be up on stage performing or recording their own album. One thing that most people fail to realize is that natural ability can only get you so far along the road to a professional singing career. Singing is a talent that needs careful nurturing and years of dedicated practice to polish and hone your abilities. Without commitment and hard work, it is impossible to make it as a professional singer and so in this article, we will look at the most important skills that every singer needs to develop.
1. Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is so important if you want to become a professional singer and there are two main types of self-awareness: inner-body awareness and outer-body awareness. Inner-voice awareness is all about being able to feel how singing works inside your body. A singer’s job is to manipulate sounds, from soft tones to loud tones and low notes to high notes, but you cannot manipulate anything that you cannot feel. If you’re not aware of how your body feels when you are singing then you cannot have control over your voice and delivery.
As well as inner-body awareness, you also need to be aware of your posture and if there is any tension in your body. The best singers are able to utilize tension and then release it at the opportune moments during a performance. Outer-body awareness comes with hours and hours of practice and becoming comfortable and at ease while performing and is a skill that every singer needs.
2. Breath Control
Breath control is such an important skill for singers as your breath is really the foundation beneath every vocal. Singers must learn to manage the rate of breath leaving the body and to find the moments during a vocal performance to inhale. The rate of exhalation is absolutely key for singers to master as you may need to keep up a constant flow of breath or you may need to reserve it a little, depending on what you are singing. A lucky few singers are born with naturally developed breath control but for most singers, it is one of the areas that needs the most work and dedication.
3. Emotional Awareness
The reason that singing produces such a reaction in us as we listen is because the voice is the best instrument for conveying emotion. Singers at the top of their game can make us feel happy, sad, thoughtful, and lonely and this comes from subtleties in their vocal delivery. Emotions, however, can also affect a singer’s performance and emotional awareness is a very important skill to ensure that you deliver no matter what is going on inside you. Whether you’re wide awake, tired, grumpy, brokenhearted, or full of joy, you can’t control your emotions unless you’re aware of how they’re affecting how you sing. When you’re on stage or in the recording studio, you have to be there in the present moment to connect to what you’re singing. You can’t be in the present moment if you’re worrying about your technique. Emotional awareness and control are what separates good singers from truly great ones.

4. Audience Awareness
Being a singer takes enormous technical skill but technique is only the gateway to being completely authentic on stage and being connecting emotionally with your audience. The experts at becomesingers.com explain that every time you perform to a live audience, you must keep in mind what you want the audience to take away from the performance. In order to do this, you need to check in on them while you are performing. You need to see if what you’re doing is having the effect that you want it to have.
Most audiences don’t care about the technical aspect of singing, they only want that connection with you. Sing every note with real emotion. If you believe it then the audience will believe too. A singer who is able to do amazing technical stuff will always be able to hold the audience for the entirety of the album or a two-hour show, but the singers whom audiences never forget are the ones that they felt a connection to.
Singing is a wonderful hobby that can lift our moods, connect us emotionally with another person or moment in time and help us to express our feelings. A career in singing is a wonderful journey but it takes hard work and dedication to develop the skills required to make it as a singer. Talent will only take you so far, and if you are one of the many people who dream of becoming a singer one day, there is no time like the present to start practicing.
