Types Of Specialist Qualifications Geared Towards Work In Healthcare

If the last year has taught us anything, it is that the healthcare industry is absolutely essential to the survival of society. The prominence of healthcare in the public imagination will no doubt prompt many people to foster the dream of having a career related to it. Healthcare is an immensely varied field. There are hundreds of different niches in which to develop a career, and all of these specialisms require unique skillsets.

If you are looking to pursue a career in the healthcare industry, you’ll probably need some form of specialist qualification. Healthcare qualifications are by no means limited to the traditional medicine degrees that might pop into your mind. Instead, healthcare education is incredibly diverse, preparing students for very specific niches in the vast business of keeping people looked after. Here are some of the most useful and interesting qualifications that can lead to a career in the healthcare industry:

Healthcare Administration

Healthcare administration is quite a broad field. It encompasses all of the non-clinical decision making responsibilities within medical institutions. Students who qualify in healthcare administration can go on to work as clinic managers, public health officials, or pharmaceutical strategists. Master’s level healthcare administration degrees, such as the Boston College MHA degree in Massachusetts, are advanced qualifications that allow students to combine learning about the healthcare industry with business strategy.

Nursing

Nurses are at the core of any healthcare provision strategy. Nursing has come a long way since the Crimean War, when the profession first came into its own. Today, nursing is a very deep career, with lots of technical and interpersonal skills required. Qualifications in nursing are available all the way up to doctorate level. Doctorates in nursing are usually marketed towards senior nurses that want to innovate within their field – adding academic research to their lived experience in order to make change. Senior nurses are responsible for innovating in the healthcare field – they are the front line in public health and pandemic control among other things.

Clinical Psychology

Clinical psychologists, unlike psychiatrists, take a holistic approach towards mental health care. They combine an understanding of theory with a close analysis of patients to develop solutions for people in distress. This is a very broad field with lots of specialisms, but all clinical psychologists need a core degree level qualification in order to work.

Most careers in clinical psychology only really start after a postgraduate qualification. Degree level psychologists need to undertake a further training course to learn how they might apply their knowledge in a clinical, patient-oriented setting.

Occupational Therapy

Taking a postgraduate course in occupational therapy can open a great many career paths up to you. Occupational therapists use both physical and psychological therapy techniques to improve people’s lives. It is a varied field. You could specialize in rehabilitating veterans, providing equipment to hospitals, or creating care programs. Qualifying as an occupational therapist usually requires a postgraduate course that follows on from a medical or healthcare-related degree course.
