Anxiety has become a part of most people’s daily experience since the pandemic has broken out. In fact, according to this study, anxiety centered around family, politics, and physical health has increased dramatically for all demographics across genders, age groups, and geographic areas. There are so many different breakdowns of why people are feeling anxious, but for most people, it boils down to one main theme. The flat out uncertainty of the time we’re living in is crushing people.
In a normal scenario, people who are struggling with fear about the way the world is going have resources to get help or information. Therapists can help pin down the reason for your uncertainty and help you take steps to feel more secure. However, these days, therapists are stuck with the rest of us. There’s no guarantee that your company will exist next month, that you’ll be allowed to leave your home, or even that this situation will come to a close. While there are resources available for those struggling with anxiety and fear, there is little comfort to be gleaned from the reinforcement of the sentiment that even the people running the show don’t know when this will be over.
There are some small ways people can cope with the stress. Working out, maintaining a routine, and talking to friends and family are all normal coping mechanisms. However, every time a person is forced to work out with water bottles in their bedroom rather than dumbbells at their gym, Facetime their friends rather than meet up with them, or spend another evening watching Netflix, there is a reminder that the world has been inexplicably altered. And it doesn’t provide the same comfort.
The one thing that does is this- we are not alone. Every single person on the planet has been forced to confront the quarantine, the isolation, the fear, and the uncertainty that this pandemic has caused. The situations may vary but everyone is exhausted and scared and frustrated. It might seem like a small comfort, but it’s actually a powerful link between us all. We can all relate to each other these days the same way we relate to each other after a sudden tragedy.
The world might not be giving us much to look forward to these days, but we can all agree that things will not be like this forever. Without a firm end date, it’s hard to keep perspective. But this too shall pass and we’ll all be a little more grateful and a little happier to be alive.
