Unique Holidays Worth Paying Attention To

Everyone knows about the traditional holidays, but what about some of the newer or lesser-known ones? For example, how often do you celebrate National Bean Day (Jan. 6), Bubble Bath Day (Jan. 8), or National Hot Tea Day (Jan. 12)? And, even though you might not know the history of a day dedicated to having a hangover, you can likely guess when it is. If you said “January 1,” you’d be right. Those are just a few of the odd commemorations that are actual, official celebrations in the first month of the year. What about the other eleven months? Here are holidays that take place after January. You may or may not be familiar with them, so get ready to mark those calendars.

February 17: National Random Acts of Kindness Day

While this Random Acts of Kindness Day tradition has been around for the last 10 years or so, the simple concept is to perform at least one kind act for someone else. To keep with the true spirit of the celebration, it’s best if you don’t let the person know that you are the one who did the good deed. The concept is sort of like secret Santa but you do something nice rather than give a gift.

March 10: Middle Name Pride

Unique in concept, MNPD, as it’s known to those who enjoy it, is the time to let everyone know what your middle name is. Remember, your parents probably spent hours deciding what name to put between your first and last, so take the time to make it known to the world. If you’re not sure why you have the middle name you ended up with, March 10th is the time to start doing research on the topic.

April 2: Reconciliation

After pulling a few pranks on your friends and relatives on April Fool’s, this little-known holiday fittingly comes right after, on April 2. All kidding aside, the intent is for people to make amends with old acquaintances in any way possible. Organizers say you should call someone, email them or meet them in person to apologize for a past misdeed, no matter how large or small.

June 4: Hug Your Cat

If you don’t have a cat, this is a good chance to adopt one because the all of June is “Adopt a Cat Month.” Started by a pet company back in the 1980’s, this animal-based celebration has caught on with people who love those furry little creatures who share our lives and wake us up at odd hours. In some cities, animal rescue facilities are busier in June than at any other time due to the publicity associated with pet adoption near the beginning of summer.

August 15: Relaxation

The Spa industry has been pushing this one for decades so it’s a good bet that they created it to drum up extra business. No matter. Who doesn’t need a few extra hours to relax, get a massage, go fishing, stretch, take a hot bath or just do nothing? If you do enjoy spa services, most companies run specials and discounts on this holiday.
