What Are The Common Causes Of Acne?

Getting an acne breakout can be one of your worst nightmares, especially if you have an important event coming up and you want to look flawless. It can be quite annoying to find yourself with a face full of pimples; however, there is actually an explanation for that. Understanding the causes of acne will help you take the necessary steps to avoid having breakouts as often or at all. If you’re wondering what could be the root cause of your acne, here’s what you need to know.

Dead Skin

Dead skin is one of the main reasons for acne. Basically, dead skin cells accumulate and block your pores or hair follicles causing breakouts that can seem like they came out of nowhere when, in fact, they’ve been in the making for up to eight weeks prior. You can get rid of most dead skin cells by exfoliating on the regular so that your skin is always healthy and acne is minimal. Just be careful because harsh exfoliation can do more harm than good.

Medications

Certain types of medication can cause acne, or if you already have acne, it could cause your condition to worsen. Mainly, you will find that these medications either make your cells regenerate faster, which causes them to die and clog your pores, thus causing acne. If you have just started a new medication to clear up your skin, then it is going to get worse before it becomes better. What you are putting your skin through is called skin purging, and you will witness the results after a while, not immediately afterward. If you are unsure whether the medication you are taking causes acne or not, then you can ask your doctor or read the side effects that the medication has.

Dirt Build-up

Hygiene plays a very large part in acne. If you do not take care of your face hygiene your acne breakouts are going to be, and you might even be left with scars from all the breakouts happening. Like any surface in the world, your face is exposed to different particles in the air, including minuscule dust particles. Over time, if you do not make it a point to wash your face regularly and take proper care of your skin, you will find yourself with pimples all over your face.

Stress

If a person is at a stressful point in their life, their bodies’ reaction to it could come in the form of an acne breakout. People often think that stress is just a mental issue, however, stress actually affects your body more physiologically. People who are prone to stress often find themselves with acne, especially if there is an event or situation they are anxious about coming up. So do not be surprised if you get acne a couple of days before a special event, a work submission, or presentation.

Excess Oil

Each person has natural oil coming out of their skin. However, the amount of oil your skin produces differs from one person to the next. This is why there are different skin types. There is dry skin, and those produce the least amount of oil. There is oily skin, and that indicates that the skin produces a large amount of oil. The third and final type is a mixture of both dry and oily skin. If you have oily skin, then you have a higher chance of oil clogging up your pores and causing acne. To avoid such cases, avoid using skincare products with lots of oils because your face is already producing a lot of oil. Adding more oil to the mix is just going to clog up the hair follicles and cause pimples to appear.

Skincare

Cosmetics

Sometimes, certain cosmetic products do more harm than good. This is especially true if they do not allow your face to breathe. If you are going to be using cosmetics regularly, then you need to make sure that you take off all the makeup before you go to bed. You also need to figure out a skincare routine that boosts your skin’s health so that it can handle the chemicals you are exposing it to in the form of cosmetics.

Hormonal Changes

If you are pregnant or about to get your period, then it is completely normal to find yourself dealing with an acne breakout. This is due to hormonal changes in your body, and more often than not, you can find out if the acne you have is hormone-induced because of its location. Hormonal acne is usually found on the lower half of the face, specifically in the chin and jaw areas.

Types of Food Consumed

If you eat a lot of fast food, greasy food, or chocolate, then this might be causing your acne. Your diet has a direct effect on your body. Not only does it affect your weight, but it also affects your skin, as well as the rest of your body. you might notice that a couple of days after eating a bar of chocolate, you get a breakout.

Now that you are aware of all the factors that affect your skin and could be the cause of your acne, you can do what is necessary to prevent breakouts. Having a consistent and effective skin regimen can be a preventative measure; however, you still need to be careful of what you are eating and the amount of stress you deal with in your life. Most importantly, you should try your best to have clean and acne-free skin and take care of your overall health.
