What Is Veeam Backup & Replication? How Does It Work?

VeeamⓇ Backup & Replication™ is software that backs up all of your data and applications. It provides fast, flexible, and reliable recovery of cloud, virtual and physical workloads in case of data loss or hardware failure. Unlike legacy backup products, Veeam provides Modern Data Protection in a single platform that is simple, flexible, reliable and powerful.  Replacing legacy backup is a key enabler of digital transformation, business continuity and increased agility.

Built for businesses of all sizes, Veeam Backup & Replication is an backup solution that is a key part of the Veeam platform for Cloud, Virtual, Physical, SaaS and Kubernetes environments.

This software is designed to work on any machine that runs Windows Server or Windows client operating systems. Veeam Backup & Replication for Microsoft 365 is designed to provide organizations with a solution to manage backups more efficiently and effectively.

The software can use both an agentless and agent-based technology. Agentless backups are performed without any software on the system being backed up, such as virtual machines. Agentless technology can allow easy scale for large environments and increase performance over storage networks. Agent-based technology means that it installs on each computer that you want to back up. Once the agent is installed, it begins collecting data from your system and sending it over the network to where your Veeam server is located. Customers also can use Veeam ONE to monitor your system’s performance and alerts you if there are any problems or issues with the backup infrastructure or process itself.

Veeam Backup & Replication can perform both scheduled and on-demand backups for NAS file data, physical systems and virtual machine images that are to be stored on disk, in a file share, or in the cloud. You can also schedule replication jobs to create copies of your backup files and optimize network bandwidth usage when transferring data over a WAN connection between two sites by using asynchronous replication technology.

It has the following features:

  • Backup for virtualized environments.
  • Backup for physical servers.
  • Replication for disaster recovery.
  • Cloud Connect for DRaaS (Disaster Recovery as a Service).
  • Centralized management of backup jobs.
  • Fast recovery.

How Does It Work?

Veeam Backup & Replication works by backing up your data in many flexible modes. The Veeam CDP (Continuous Data Protection) replication jobs can protect systems in near real time (as little as 2 second recovery point objectives), so it’s always protected. It also offers many Instant Recovery techniques, so if you need to restore lost files, they’re available immediately—no matter where they’re located. Instant Recovery functions like an instant clone, but of the backup. The backup is instantly presented as a ready to go virtual machine. Additionally, physical servers can instantly be restored as a converted virtual machines as well.

This software has many options that allow you to back up and recover virtual machines (VM), as well as physical servers, file shares, desktops/laptops, and endpoints. You can choose between full VM backups or incremental backups, depending on what suits your needs best.

Advantages of Veeam Backup

Granular Recovery Capability.
With Veeam Backup & Replication, you can restore individual application items, drives, files and folders instead of having to restore an entire VM or application, which means less downtime when restoring data after an event like ransomware or malware infection.

If you are looking for a backup and recovery software, Veeam is the right choice. It is the best software for protecting your cloud data. Veeam Backup & Replication is a great solution for small businesses, medium-sized companies, and large enterprises. It has been available on the market since 2006 and has won many awards.

Does Veeam Encrypt Backups?

In Veeam Backup & Replication, encryption works at the following levels:

  • Backup job.
  • Transaction log backup job.
  • Backup copy job.
  • VeeamZIP.
  • Tapes in media pools.

Veeam Backup & Replication reads VM or file data, encodes data blocks, transfers them to the target side in the encrypted format, and stores the data to a file in the backup repository or archives the data to tape. Veeam Backup & Replication transfers encrypted data back to the source side and decrypts it there.

Veeam Backup & Replication also allows you to encrypt network traffic going between the primary site and the disaster recovery site. Different encryption keys are used for every job session. There is also the capability to duplicate and compress data backed up by Veeam.

Does Veeam Backup SQL Server?

Veeam Backup & Replication allows you to create application-consistent backups for Microsoft SQL Server. To create transactionally consistent backups or replicas of VMs that run Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange or Oracle, you must enable application-aware processing in job settings.

Application-aware processing is the Veeam technology based on Microsoft VSS. Microsoft VSS is responsible for quiescing applications on the VM and creating a consistent view of application data on the VM guest OS or physical server. Use of Microsoft VSS ensures that there are no unfinished database transactions or incomplete application files when Veeam Backup & Replication triggers the VM snapshot (or shadow copy of physical server) and starts copying image data to the target.

Can Veeam make backup copies?

Veeam Backup & Replication offers backup copy capabilities, allowing you to create several instances of the same backup data in different locations, whether on- or off-site. Veeam Backup & Replication fully automates the backup copy process and lets you specify retention settings to maintain the desired number of restore points, as well as full backups for archival purposes, including on different storage systems.

Veeam supports backup copy for numerous types of backups, including:

  • Backups of Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere virtual machines created with Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Backups of physical machines created with Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, Veeam Agent for Linux, Veeam Agent for Mac, Veeam Agent for Oracle Solaris, or Veeam Agent for IBM AIX.
  • File share backups created with Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Backups of Microsoft Azure virtual machines created with Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure.
  • Backups of AWS EC2 instances virtual machines created with Veeam Backup for AWS.
  • Backups of Google Cloud compute virtual machines created with Veeam Backup for Google Cloud.

Can You Verify Recovery of Veeam Backups?

Veeam Backup & Replication offers two technologies to verify recoverability of VM backups and replicas:

1. SureBackup.

Veeam Backup & Replication features its own backup and recovery technology called SureBackup. This technology allows you to test VM backups and check if you can recover data at any point from them.

2. SureReplica.

Veeam Backup & Replication guarantees the recoverability of your data with this SureBackup recovery verification technology. It lets you validate your disaster recovery environment without impacting the production infrastructure. You can automatically verify every created restore point of every VM replica and ensure that they are functioning as expected.
