Why Having The Wrong Mattress Type Can Deprive You Of Sleep

If you’ve ever woken up feeling tired or groggy, even though you have more than the suggested 8 hours, there could be a number of reasons why this is happening.  You could be affected by things that have to do with your diet, not having enough exercise, not getting enough deep sleep, having bad sleeping schedules or patterns,  Although there are many reasons you could be feeling fatigued after waking, aside from adjusting your sleep schedule better, you might want to take a look into your bed itself.

The fact is, many of the problems you might associate with sleep, restlessness, waking up in the middle of the night, uncomfortableness, etc.  All these might be tied to the bed you’re sleeping in and it not being the proper bed for you.

Firmness

Firmness is not a bad thing to have in a bed mattress.  But you can have a bed that is too firm. You want to ensure your bed is the proper firmness and comfort level for your liking.  If a bed is too rigid, you and your body will notice it in the form of waking up with muscle and joint pains. A bed that is too firm can have a negative impact on your tailbone and any issues there would translate to feeling it in your spine.  A bed that is too soft is not much better as this can have similar problematic effects on your body with things like your posture. The perfect mattresses are the ones that have the balance you are most comfortable with.  Choosing the right bed will have long term effects in addition to immediately impacting you, and  causing you to have a rough night’s sleep. You may wake up in the morning and have pains, severe enough to hinder your daily routines.  Back pain is common among the types of injuries problematic sleeping can do.

Size mattress matters

In addition to the firmness of a mattress, the size of the mattress can also have an effect on your sleep quality.  Although it may be pricey to be upgrading your bed and frame size as you grow, it is an investment that will help in the long run. Your bed size can affect your sleep because if you can’t properly fit comfortably in your bed, you’re more susceptible to those recurring muscle and body pains.  Limbs dangling off the edge means your bed size might not be large enough, and this means the body is contorting in positions, or not distributing your body weight evenly, and that may cause things like muscle tension and improper blood flow. Ensuring that you have the right sized bed can help prevent waking up with as much body pain.

Quality

As mentioned, getting enough hours of sleep is not enough, you must ensure that is quality sleep as well.  If the quality of your sleep is affected, this may cause you to feel fatigued in the morning. In addition to feelings of tiredness and drowsiness, these can correlate to a worsened mood, poorer attention and awareness.  These can be negative contributors to things like poor memory, low productivity, and a lack of creativity. These problems can multiply and translate to poor daily functioning at work and school, and then form a cycle that leads to anxiety of these problems, which would then cause you to have an even harder time sleeping.

Test Drive

When considering the quality of beds, keep in mind that as comfortable as some material might be, it may not be the best for you despite feeling comfortable when trying in the store.  Sure, you may have laid down and thought you found the perfect bed for you, but it might not be until a few night’s rests that you can fully test out your bed. Some types of mattress, depending on their material, like memory foam for example, may be more inclined to retain more heat than others, or you may know you are not comfortable sleeping 8 hours in that mattress because you only had a few minutes in the store.  Having a few nights to try out a bed will let you know if you’ve picked out the right one.

Getting enough sleep is important.  And not only that but making sure that the sleep you are getting is quality sleep is just as important.  Sleep is so important to your short term and long term health and not putting enough care and awareness into your sleep can actually take years off your life.  So make sure you prioritize the sleep of you and your loved ones, and this will translate to a more energized and longer life.
