Why Your Exterior Doors Could Be Risking Your Home’s Security

5 Reasons Your Exterior Doors Could Be Prone To Break-Ins

Having exterior doors without the relevant measures is not a sure way of keeping intruders away. There are some factors you should consider to make sure your entry door serves its purpose. However, some of these factors can be neglected as they seem normal, which is why you become vulnerable to break-ins.

To keep yourself safe, WindowTech Windows and Doors has compiled some of the things that could compromise the security of your exterior doors. Take time to learn about these factors so that you can know what to do and avoid.

1. They Have a Key or Know the Code

Giving someone your spare key or storing it in a safe place is one way of accessing your home in case you lose yours. Often, people are negligent on whom they trust their spare key or see where they place it. The same applies to the code, only that it cannot be misplaced like the keys.

If you keep your keys this way, it is easy for intruders to get into your house anytime you are not around. They do not have to use force to get inside, but they use what you use in that nobody will suspect anything unusual happening.

2. You Have an Old or Weak Door

When you do not take care of your old and weak door, you are creating a way through to criminals. Nobody loves struggling when they have a sure option. The same case applies to these types of intruders. If they realize that your home has a weak point, they will utilize it to get what they want.

Instead of waiting for the worst, work promptly on your weak exterior doors to discourage thieves from breaking-in. Make sure you install incredible features to back up your door’s security.

3. It’s Dark and Unlit

Dark door areas act as blind spots that criminals take advantage of. They do so because no one can see what is happening in the dark. By the time you realize there is someone uninvited in your home, it is often too late.

Darkness in your entrance doors can be caused by shadows from untrimmed hedges, nonfunctional bulbs, or not lighting the area at all. Prevent burglary by ensuring your bulb lights brightly at the entry door, and no shadows are falling around the area.

4. Your Door Has One Lock Only

Increasing the security of your home does not mean overloading your exterior doors with multiple locks. It does not also mean to have one lock on your door. One lock makes it easy to get into your house when an intruder applies enough force on your door.

Consider putting several relevant locks on top and below the original lock. They make it hard to get through since a lot of force will be needed to get past all the locks. Make sure that the additional locks are quality so that their enforcement counts.

5. Leaving Your Door Unlocked

Leaving your door unlocked is another way of welcoming everyone, regardless of their intentions in your home. Even if you are expecting a friend or relative to get home before you do, never leave your house unlocked. Thieves are fond of taking such advantages, and they get away with valuable items from your home.

If you are a forgetful person, make use of automatic entrance doors. They lock automatically once you closed. You can open them from the inside but will need a key while accessing them from the outside. If you use a code, you feed it instead.

Keeping thieves away from your property requires basic precautions that people often ignore. So, they end up spending a lot of money on security firms to have their property guarded. There is nothing wrong with having a security firm watch over your property. But, before pouring your money on these firms, make sure you have protected yourself first. You may end up changing your mind after realizing the efficiency.
