Eye On The Valley – College & Career Counselor At SCVi Charter Schools – November 03, 2023
On today’s episode of Eye on the Valley, host Matt Watson talks with Kris Nilsen, College and Career Counselor at SCVi Charter Schools. Kris works with every high school learner on their path to college. For the past 8 years, Kris has been guiding the learners in their application process, recommendation letters and overall family support as their child navigates the process. As early as 8th grade, Kris begins the conversation with the learner, helping to determine what interests them as well as financial aid possibilities. She says that billions of dollars go unused from the government because many families assume they don’t qualify for the aid. She encourages all families to research the financial aid.

Next, Matt welcomes Nancy Lantis in the KHTS studio. Nancy is the Artistic Director of the Eclipse Theater LA. A seasoned actress, writer and director, Nancy talks about becoming a nonprofit at the beginning of the COVID lockdown. During the lockdown, Nancy and her team had to pivot, finding online ways to connect with their customers by producing online content related to the theater. The theater produces both original and previously staged productions, as they expect to stage ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ next year. Upcoming, audiences can enjoy the world premiere of ‘Beachcomber.’ The show follows the story of a group of people trapped in a small Oregon bar during a massive storm, with humor, secrets and confrontation in the group. ‘Beachcomber’ runs November 10-26th at The Main in Newhall. Tickets are available at beachcomber.eventbrite.com and can be found for $10 during a Black Friday event.
Lastly, Matt welcomes LA County Sherriff Captain Justin Diez, a 19 year veteran of the force. Captain Diez accepted his role in March of 2020, just as the pandemic began. Naturally, he and his team had to push through the situation, finding that they were unable to quarantine and still needing to serve the community of 290 thousand people properly. Captain Diez talks about the current state of crime rates in the SCV. He states that the majority of crime is property crime, as thieves are searching in unlocked cars, open garages and stealing packages from your front porch. Overall, crimes are up by about 100 from last year, however, the SCV has also seen an influx of new residents with new homes being built and new businesses coming to the area as well. Matt asks Captain Diez how the community can help the law enforcement officers do their job best, he says “a simple hi and thank you goes a long way.”
