Denim Day — April 29, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Greg Amsler, Owner of Salt Creek Grille. Greg talks about what reopening his restaurant would like with talks about reopening the country accelerating quickly. Greg talks about the logistics of a six-feet-apart order in a sit-down restaurant environment, and how payments and bills might have to change if there are long-term ramifications due to Covid-19. Greg shares how other restaurant owners are also preparing to reopen and trying to figure out the best way to go about doing that. Listen to Greg’s full interview at the beginning of the first hour of the podcast.

Matt takes some time to give a special message to parents at home who feel like they are overwhelmed with the task of homeschooling. Matt talks about how if you feel like throwing in the towel then that is perfectly normal. Matt has spent almost his entire professional career as an educator and he has a lot of experience with feeling frustrated that a lesson plan or group assignment didn’t go the way he thought it would. Stay confident and keep trying is Matt’s message. Listen to it just after the half-way point of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Ethan Guthrie, Senior at SCVi. Ethan is today’s Senior Spotlight honoree! Ethan calls in to talk about the hard work he has completed so far at SCVi and about his future plans on his educational journey. Ethan also talks about his fondest memories and some of his favorite experiences at SCVi. Listen to his graduation speech at the end of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest was scheduled to be Assemblywoman Christy Smith, but she was unable to call in due to a meeting that ran long. We are doing everything we can to reschedule her for the soonest possible appearance. We saved all questions asked on Facebook Live and plan on asking her the same questions to ensure everyone has a fair chance to be heard. We apologize for the inconvenience and will update you as soon as we are able to reschedule Assemblywoman Christy Smith.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about Denim Day. Denim Day is a yearly event that is dedicated to raising awareness of rape and sexual assault, and Kristina takes it very seriously. Matt and Kristina talk about how abuse can have severe ramifications for all parties involved. Children of parents who are abusive towards one another become desensitized to what a stable relationship means, and it can be harder for them to find a stable relationship of their own. Listen to Kristina and Matt talk about the importance of Denim Day, and how physical, sexual, and emotional abuse need to be addressed in the last half hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
