Driveway DJ — April 1, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Sara McDaniels is in for the week to fill her place.

The first guest is Allison Bravo, Program Coordinator at iLEAD Online Schools, and she calls in to talk about the learning environment that iLEAD Schools has created online. Allison shares how iLEAD has been able to create a classroom feeling from online communication, and how important it is to have a human on the other side of an online learning platform. Automated systems and tools can be helpful, but should never be used as a substitute for a human providing real feedback that matters. iLEAD Schools takes this principle to heart, and has worked diligently to create an online learning environment that is just as effective and interactive as an in-person classroom learning environment. Allison also talks about how iLEAD has implemented their online programs to help keep the youngest of learners engaged and involved in an online learning environment. Allison ends by giving her advice to parents to help them give their kids the best learning experience possible while trying new things amidst a dramatically changed social climate.

Our next guest is Graham Silver, a DJ who has pivoted his business to being a Driveway DJ amidst the quarantines to prevent the spread of Covid-19. He has turned a negative into a positive, and taken his DJ equipment on the road and quite literally, to the streets, to play music for kids and adults alike. His music helps families and their children get moving, have some fun, and take their minds off the stresses and worries that have been so prevalent in our lives as of late. Listen to his interview at the end of Hour 1 to hear his amazing story, and how you can throw a party in the streets of your own neighborhood.

The third guest of the show is radio station Co-owner, Carl Goldman, who calls in to share his legendary April Fool’s jokes on this April Fool’s Day. Carl briefly talks about how he has recovered completely from Covid-19, and how he has remained self-quarantined to assure that he was safe and ready to reenter the public. Matt and Sara ask Carl about the jokes he has pulled on the Santa Clarita Valley, and Carl explains the long history of April Fool’s jokes that are played by the media. There are many instances of major media companies that have written fake articles with a fake story that get people talking. Carl talks about how he decided not to do a joke this year due to the serious nature of our social climate, and how people around the world don’t need any additional stressors in their lives. Carl continues on to share how KHTS has used their influence to help spread some levity and humor across the valley on this one day during the year.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
