Education, No Matter What — April 13, 2020
On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.
Our first guest on the show is Michela James, Physical Education Teacher, and she calls in to the show to talk about completing PE (Physical Education) courses at home. PE classes often rely on face-to-face communication, but Michela and her fellow teachers at La Mesa Junior High School have found great ways to continue teaching students through online delivery methods. Michela talks about how parents can help their kids stay active, and emphasizes how important a daily routine is. Maintaining a routine has been a popular suggestion to help kids and adults alike stay active and on top of their, and that is due to how extremely helpful this practice is to keeping our bodies and minds healthy. Michela offers advice for parents of kids and teenagers of all ages, and suggests spending some extra time to develop a full body workout and to utilize YouTube to find some great at-home workouts that can be created. Listen to all the suggestions and advice she gives in the podcast during the first segment of the first hour of the show.
Matt spends some time finishing our conversation about the book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey, and tells us about the eighth habit of highly effective people. Matt also shares his experience about the first two years he was a teacher, and how he struggled tremendously before he found his voice and way.
Our next guest is Dr. Omar Torres, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at College of the Canyons. He also talks about how College of the Canyons continues to provide nearly all of the same services they usually provide via electronic delivery methods or CDC-compliant settings. Dr. Torres shares his extreme gratitude for everyone at College of the Canyons that has helped complete the transition to entirely online delivery methods for their classes. Dr. Torres continues on to talk about how College of the Canyons is already looking ahead to the summer and fall semesters of this year in order to plan for potential changes if the current mandates from the CDC and LA County Health Officials continue on throughout the year. About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:
“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.
We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.
It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.
Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
