Embracing Failure in Life and Math — April 6, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest is Amber Soto, Director of Mathematics at iLEAD & SCVi Schools, calls in to talk about how to teach mathematics effectively at home. Mathematics is not everyone’s strongest subject, and some of have tried to avoid it as much as possible during our time as a student. Whether you love it or hate it, mathematics is an essential part of a complete educational curriculum and necessary to help develop critical thinking skills. Amber talks about how to conquer our fear of mathematics, and how to help your kids complete their mathematics lessons at home. Amber shares how hard she and the other facilitators (teachers) are working to help make their in-school curriculum easy-to-use at home. Amber also talks about how homeschooling is usually something that is prepared for throughout the summer and prior to the semester starting and how the situation we find ourselves in now is very different from normal homeschooling practices. She also talks about how necessary it is to embrace failure in mathematics, and to know that there is not just one correct response to every problem. Learning from our mistakes is very normal in many other parts of our life, and it is a practice that Amber encourages people to embrace when studying and learning mathematics. Amber provides comforting advice on how to help your kids continue to achieve and succeed in their mathematics lessons while learning from home.

Our next guest is Superintendent of the Acton/Agua Dulce School District, Larry King. Mr. King calls in to talk about his educational journey, and how his experience with education was less than ideal and how he had to fail a lot before taking the position he holds today. Knowing what it’s like to fail, Mr. King takes education very seriously, and he works extra hard to help ensure kids learn from their failures and understand that failure is a critical experience on the path to success. Mr. King thanks his fellow staff, educators, and every person working at the schools across the Santa Clarita Valley for their hard work and tremendous efforts in the last few weeks of transitioning to online learning. Mr. King talks about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and how so many children, teenagers, and young adults will not be able to experience some of the most anticipated and impactful experiences in their academic careers and young lives. He talks about how he and everyone around him will continue to move forward while also giving students the experiences they will miss out on such as graduation, promotion, prom, and other school traditions experienced by everyone. Mr. King finishes by talking about his personal motto, “Stay gold.” He talks about how there are “stay gold” moments in everyone’s life, and that these may be joyous, sad, or adverse moments in our lives. Each of these “stay gold” moments are how we chose to persevere through challenge or embraced the sweet reward at the end of an endeavor personally or academically. Listen to everything he has to say by tuning in to the second half of today’s show in the podcast link.

Our final guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about the many different existential questions we learn to answer through the course of our lives. These questions change depending on what age and stage we are in life, and some of them are harder to find an answer to than others. Kristina and Matt talk about how the severe change in our daily lives affects our emotional outlook.

Listen in as Matt Watson, Amber Soto, Superintendent Larry King, and Kristina de Bree talk about the importance of failure on the path to success.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
