How to Get a Job in 2020 — May 11, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Regina Lee, Founder of Smile SCV. Regina is 14-years-old and a freshman at Saugus High School. Regina talks about the shift to online schooling and how she has found herself really missing her normal high school environment and routine. Regina decided she wanted to establish Smile SCV when she was watching the news and saw how many people were becoming unemployed. Regina wanted to do a food drive at first, but realized that would be difficult with the impact of Covid-19. She shifted her focus to a monetary donation and has forged on from there. Listen to how Regina established Smile SCV and her determination has led to her to where she is at today. You can find her full interview in the first two segments of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Cassie Croasmun, Senior at SCVi Charter School. Cassie is today’s Senior Spotlight honoree! Eye On The Valley knows how valuable the high school senior year experience is, and we try to take time out of each show to honor a senior that is graduating this year. Cassie talks about how school has been different since shifting to online learning, and talks about the things she misses the most about her usual high school routine. Cassie also talks about her plans for the future and what she is looking forward to as she moves into the next stages of her life. Listen to Cassie’s graduation speech and celebration in the third segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Keri Aaver, Director of Job Placement at College of the Canyons. Keri calls in to the show to talk about how to make your resume stand out and get a job in 2020. Keri talks about how the application process has changed dramatically in just a decade, and how so many robots are now involved in the application process. Keri gives excellent tips on how to create a resume that gets you past the barrier you’re stuck behind. She talks about how your resume is the time to look professional while showing how you stand out from the crowd with the information contained within. She stresses how important it is to remember that more robots see your resume than humans so keep this in mind when crafting a resume. With the recent pandemic causing mass layoffs, Keri also warns that applicant screening softwares are going to be more active with more and more people sending out applications looking for a new job. She breaks down formatting of your resume, keyword management, and so much more. Listen to Keri’s incredibly valuable advice on how to create a better resume in the first and second segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about the link between depression and anxiety. Kristina talks about how common anxiety is but how anxiety is also extremely treatable. Listen to Kristina’s advice in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
