Maintaining Mental Health — June 3, 2020
On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.
Our first guest on the show is Greg Amsler, Owner of Salt Creek Grille in Valencia. Greg calls in to talk about the progress he and other restaurant owners have made towards reopening. Some were able to open for the brief time they were allowed to, but the nightly curfews in response to protests have forced most, if not all, restaurants to close back down. Greg speaks on how his restaurant is planning to reopen with masks for all staff, waiting areas being moved outside with a page service if you would like to wait in your car. Salt Creek Grille’s layout is being redesigned to ensure all tables are at least six feet apart along with plexi-glass barriers for tables that are closer together. Greg has been open to all ideas on reopening, and is doing everything he can and needs to do to ensure the safety and health of his customers. Greg misses being a part of the graduations, Mother’s Day, Easter, Father’s Day, and all of the fun summer activities that bring people together, and can’t wait to reopen so the community can celebrate the way they usually do. Listen to Greg’s full interview in the first segment of the first hour of the podcast.
Our next guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about processing and coping with everything that has been on the news. For both kids and adults, processing difficult information on the new can be a difficult task. Kristina talks about how to talk to kids amid challenging times. Some kids may see what is happening in the news and ask questions that require a well-thought-out, age-appropriate response. Teenagers are in a very exposed spot due to their increased use of social media on which news and other challenging topics are always present. Kristina talks about ways for adults to embrace how their kids and teenagers have been experiencing the news. Kristina also talks about how the death of George Floyd has galvanized so many people across the country, and how a traumatic death captured on video can have a profound mental impact on others. Kristina shares some of the ways we can all help ourselves and others maintain our mental health while engaging with current events. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the second segment of the first hour of the podcast.
Matt and Sara take some time to take about SCVi and iLEAD Schools in more detail, and about how people can get involved with their schools. SCVi has schools across the country and their programs are some of the best at getting kids to really learn and grow. In addition to a traditional school experience, iLEAD and SCVi Schools give kids and teenagers the chance to complete projects that are invaluable experiences for learners of any age. For example, NASA works with SCVi schools to launch sutdents’ projects into space so they can perform legitimate research in space. These types of opportunities are abundant for students of every age at SCVi and iLEAD Schools, and they give learners a foundation of knowledge, critical thinking skills, and fun memories that inspire kids for a lifetime. Get involved with SCVi and iLEAD Schools by visiting their campuses (when it is safe to do so), attending informative webinars, calling someone at the schools, or visiting their website by clicking here.
Our next guest on the show is Pars Watson, Graduating Senior from Saugus High School and Matt Watson’s son. Pars calls in to the show to talk about the ribbons he created for every one of the seniors at Saugus High School. The ribbons were created in memory of two of the students who lost their lives at the Saugus High School shooting that happened while this graduating class of seniors was at school. Pars shares why he took the time to create the ribbons for his classmates and why he felt so strongly about the project. Sara asks Pars about how this year has been and how he feels about the events that have taken place during his school year. The seniors at Saugus High School missed just over one-third of the school days during their final year, and they have had a number of challenging events occur during their time at the school. Listen to Pars’ full interview during the second segment of the second hour of the podcast.
About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:
“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.
We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.
It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.
Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
