Making the Leap to College — May 21, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guests on the show are Cheryl Sena, Facilitator at SCVi, and Sam Salters, 2020 SCVi Graduate. Cheryl and Sam call in to talk about how different 2020 has been compared to other years. Sam is a graduating member of this year’s class and talks about how his year has been impacted due to the outbreak of Covid-19. Sam and many other students may have a different ending, but Sam talks about how grateful he is to have graduated from SCVi and for the memories he has made there. Cheryl talks in-depth about the Senior Defense/Portfolio assignment that seniors at SCVi complete, and how this assignment uniquely prepares their graduates for the next steps of their lives. The assignment asks serious questions regarding the skills, knowledge, and principles seniors have learned during their time at SCVi, and their answers are reviewed by a panel of Facilitators to provide constructive feedback. Sam had to go through this process, and he shares his experience with it, and why he believes he is a better student because of it. Listen to Cheryl and Sam give a teacher and student perspective of what 2020 has been like during the first two segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Shannon Vonnegut, City Librarian. Shannon calls in to the show to talk about how the library is reopening their buildings, and how the services they are offering will be slightly different for the time being. Santa Clarita libraries are ready to help people across the valley get back to their normal lives by opening their doors and allowing people to come in. Following all of the latest guidelines from LA County Health Officials, the libraries can provide almost all of their regular services including a book pick-up system that can fill orders in the same day. If you place an order online you can stop by your library and pick it up the same day. Shannon also talks about all of the programs and activities that the library provides for children and gives an update on them. Listen to Shannon’s full interview during the first segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about treating trauma over an extended period of time. Dealing with trauma is extremely difficult, but it is something that everyone has the ability to manage. Kristina talks about how some people experience a loss of connection to others, a loss of belief in our self, a loss of trust in others, and many other feelings that people can experience with trauma. Listen to how differently trauma can impact a person’s life in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
