Mayor Tuesday: What Phase 2 Looks Like in SCV — May 12, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth calls in to talk about the latest information on reopening Santa Clarita and about what it means for SCV to move into Phase 2. Santa Clarita is a part of Los Angeles County, and that means Santa Clarita is subject to the same actions taken in Los Angeles. This has made the reopening process a lot more complicated despite the very positive progress made in fighting Covid-19. Mayor Smyth clarifies where Santa Clarita stands in the reopening process, and provides details on how businesses can prepare to open. Mayor Smyth also provides information on the conflict between the state’s steps to reopen and LA County’s steps to reopen, and how those two timelines will most likely occur at very different paces. Listen to the Mayor give a great update on the specifics of how Santa Clarita can expect to start the reopening process during the first two segments of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Pars Watson, Senior at Saugus High School. Pars is on the show as today’s Senior Spotlight honoree! Pars talks about his journey through high school, and shares what he is focusing on in the next steps of his life. With his eyes set on San Francisco State University, Pars is excited to graduate from high school despite the unique circumstances. Pars gives his graduation speech and thanks everyone in his life for sticking by his side through his time spent in high school. Listen to Pars’ graduation speech in the third segment of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Tina Toval, Leadership Resident at SCVi & iLEAD Schools. Tina is one of the founding members of SCVi in Santa Clarita, and has been a part of the process since the very beginning. Tina talks about how proud she is to see the development of SCVi into the organization it is today. Tina also talks about how she has seen every graduating class that has come out of SCVi & iLEAD Schools, and she shares what she finds so special about the students that are graduating this year. Tina loves her job and has a passion for helping children and young adults learn the most they possibly can on their way to achieving their academic and professional dreams. Listen to Tina’s full interview in the first segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about managing extreme anxiety. Kristina talks about how anxiety manifests itself differently in each person, and usually requires a different form of treatment for each person. Kristina talks about the process she helps people go through to address their anxiety issues. Kristina also talks about the methods of therapy that are used to treat anxiety, and what each type of therapy does. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
