Mayor Tuesdays — April 28, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Santa Clarita Mayor, Cameron Smyth. Mayor Smyth gives another update in the very fluid situation regarding the current restrictions in the fight against Covid-19. Mayor Smyth provides the latest information on what Santa Clarita is doing to stop the fight against Covid-19. With restrictions quickly changing in various locations around the country, Mayor Smyth clarifies where Santa Clarita stands and how our limitations compare to what is going on in other cities. The Mayor also presents the latest numbers the city is working with and using to make some of their decisions going forward. He talks about how tricky the situation is and how the desire to reopen businesses is very high, but there are still a few hoops to jump through before completely reopening the city. Mayor Smyth mentions how Santa Clarita remains equipped and ready to go if outbreaks were to increase sharply down the road, but is delighted by the recent figures that have come out showing significant declines in the number of new cases of Covid-19. Listen to the Mayor’s full interview in which he covers much more in the first segment of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Emily Halverson, Senior at Saugus High School. Emily calls in to the show to participate in the show’s Senior Spotlight segment! With so many high school senior’s last semester cancelled, Matt and the show wanted to put a spotlight on the students that have worked so hard to get where they are at. Emily gives her “thank you” speech and a send-off into the next phases of her life. Listen to Emily in the last segment of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Marlee Lauffer, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Marlee calls in to the show to talk about how Santa Clarita and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital have responded to the outbreak of Covid-19 since it was announced a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) 49 days ago. Marlee talks about how from the very start, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital remained ahead of the curve and was constantly preparing for anything that could happen. Marlee also shares the numbers on how many people total have tested positive for Covid-19, how many have recovered, how many have passed away, and many other statistics that help quantify the situation in the Santa Clarita. Marlee is working close with the Mayor and other city officials to help guide the response to Covid-19. Although Santa Clarita remains under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County Health Officials and whatever the state says, Marlee and other employees at the hospital are constantly providing data to city officials so they can make informed decisions as they begin to consider reopening the city. Listen to Marlee’s full interview at the beginning of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about how people can draw upon the strength and determination of people in the cystic fibrosis community. Kristina shares the power of these people, and aims to provide another source of inspiration for others to draw upon during these uncertain times. Listen to Kristina in the last segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…

  1. SCV I says thier goal is nothing short of “learning to change the world?” What does that mean ? I hope they are not pushing thier views on kids, like that crazy California sex Ed curriculum they came up with. Check that one out on YouTube ! It’s already in schools up north.
