Mike Garcia, 25th District Congressional Nominee — May 13, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Matt starts the show talking about how the California State University system announced their campuses will remain closed through the Fall semester regardless of the status of Covid-19. This impacts a tremendous amount of students that are currently enrolled and making their decision on which college they would like to enroll in after they graduate. There are a lot of decisions that go into this process for all parties involved which will significantly change the course of some student’s lives. If you or someone you know has a kid who is graduating to go to college this year, you’ll want to listen to Matt talk about this in the second segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our first guest on the show is Paul Wickline, Associate Vice President of Educational Pathways at College of the Canyons. Paul calls in to the show to talk about what COC has planned for the Fall semester. Paul talks about how COC has hopes of providing a blend of both in-person and distance-based learning classes in the Fall semester. Paul also talks about how COC is closely monitoring the demand for each and every class, and responds accordingly as classes fill up and email about additional classes. He shares information on how even science and math courses are designing online labs for course material that allows it, so that students can get as much done online as possible if they desire. With teaching methods having changed across the country, COC wants to embrace that change and help people continue their education in the way that helps them learn best. COC will never stop providing the excellent in-person classes and services that give them the reputation they have today, but they have an increased passion for creating an online college experience that anyone can access from anywhere. Listen to Paul’s great interview about what COC will be offering in the Fall during the third segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Mike Garcia, 25th Congressional District Nominee. Mike joins the show as a special guest to talk about the likelihood of his election, and what he plans to do in the next six to eight months. With such a short amount of time before the next election cycle comes around, Mike has his team ready to hit the ground running and get to work on the objectives he has mentioned in his campaign. Mike wants to get in and immediately visit where the money for Covid-19 relief is going, and ensure that it is going to the people in Santa Clarita who need it. Mike is extremely excited to get started and knows that what he does in the next few months will determine his chance to stay in office and get reelected. Mike is grateful for everyone who has supported him and for the community of Santa Clarita coming together and voting for him to get him in office. Mike thanks everyone who has helped him in the process and is truly grateful for the opportunity given to him. Listen to his full interview in the first segment of the second hour of the podcast.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about continuing address their anxiety. Kristina focuses entirely on techniques to help people reduce their anxiety at home, and gives examples of some simple tactics people can use to fight their anxiety. Kristina gives a great list of techniques in the third segment of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
