Planning Your Future — May 6, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Kris Nilson, Academic College and Career Counselor at SCVi. Kris talks about how she works for the upper school (high school equivalent), and about the ways she helps students prepare for the next stages of their life. The decisions a person makes after high school can have a lasting impact on a person’s life, and Kris is passionate about helping learners make the decisions that achieve their dreams. Kris tours colleges all over the country to make sure she knows what she is recommending to young adults getting ready to start the rest of their lives. Kris knows how important those formative years after high school are, and she works hard to help students make the most of those years. Kris also talks about what schools will look like in the fall semester of this year, and whether she thinks teachers and students will return to campuses. Listen to her full interview in the first two segments of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest is Ellie Pearlman, Senior at Saugus High School. Ellie is on the show as today’s Senior Spotlight honoree! Ellie has not yet committed to a school but she wants to attend a musical school. Ellie hopes to work in theater and has dreams of getting to Broadway in New York one day. Ellie is grateful for the community that the seniors at Saugus High School have built among themselves. Listen to Ellie’s full interview in the third segment of the first hour of the show.

Our next guest on the show is Greg Moser, Owner and Operator of Consumers Furniture Gallery. Greg talks about how the shutdown due to Covid-19 has greatly impacted the store, and how they are ready to return to work in the safest way possible. Greg talks about how important furniture is to people’s lives and certain businesses that people don’t realize. Consumers Furniture Gallery re-opened their doors just yesterday, and has taken all the precautions necessary to reopen their doors safely. Check out what they have to offer on their website and head over to their store to find the best selection of furniture in Santa Clarita.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about combating depression. With the significant change in our usual patterns, some of us have had a harder time than others keeping our routines. Some people thrive on having a normal routine and struggle with an open schedule. Kristina talks about the ways a person can start to combat their depression, and how making connections with people around you is an essential tool to helping a person feel better. Listen to Kristina’s full list of suggestions in the third segment of the second hour of the show.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
