Eye On The Valley – SCV Public Library & iLEAD Online Program – March 10, 2023

On today’s episode of Eye on the Valley, Matt Watson welcomes in, Zoraida Martinez, the senior librarian for adult services and marketing who is based out of the Newhall library, but oversees all of the 3 libraries in Santa Clarita. She also visits the other libraries to ensure that they are actively involved and have a variety of programs for the community. She’s here to discuss all the latest, fun activities, and new upcoming events for the library along with the variety of free services the library offers such as resume help, homework help, and many more.

One of the many things the library does is a partnership with the senior centers such as having a book club, crafting classes for them, and a new tech hour coming soon to teach them basic skills of technology.

Then, she talks about the special event they have with One Story, One City, which is their 8th year doing this. It’s a program dedicated to one specific book that brings the community together to talk about that book. For this year, they have chosen Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pel which is a book focusing on friendship, family, and losing people while trying to balance everything in life. Zaraida also talks about how they start planning for the One Story, One City book months in advance and goes into the process of how a book is chosen. They will have a virtual event on March 31 with the author of the book, Shelby, through Facebook live on the SCV Public Library’s Facebook page and will also have a live broadcasting of it for the people to come in and get together in the Newhall branch. Even though this program is more focused on adults, there are some family events where families are welcomed such as the recent aquarium event and many more.

Additionally, they offer lots of different services such as Ancestry.com at the libraries in person only, as well as audiobooks, digital newspaper access, and many more.

During the quick little break, Matt talks to Daiana Bogosian from COC to tell everyone all the greatest they have to offer there.

After that, Matt welcomes the second guest into the studio, an 11th grader, Nadya Canche. She is a native of iLead online since her sophomore year, she wrote a poem that touched many people’s hearts including Matt’s when he first heard it. She describes her experiences with the program and how she got into the program. She has loved her experiences with the facilitators so far and describes how she is able to create her own specialized schedule that works best for her while getting all her schoolwork.

She’s here to describe what her regular school day looks like and how she is able to help her younger sister with her PE homework because of her personalized schedule. Additionally, she talks about some of the classes offered at her school such as the child development class as a high schooler. She also mentions that in the program, they have tutors and advisors to help her with anything she may be having issues with.

Afterward, she talks about how she came about writing the poem that has affected many people who have read it. It was a poem for history class about social justice and issues while incorporating her thoughts and feelings towards it. The poem is called Maybe Just Maybe by Nadya Canche and she describes who inspired her and gave her the courage to write it.

Lastly, Big T has his five minutes of fame as he hosts trivia and actually adds a little twist for today’s trivia for “Frogger” and Producer Sara!
