Eye On The Valley – SCVI’s Dual Emergence Program And Fostering Youth Independence – October 28, 2022
On this episode of Eye On The Valley, host Matt Watson welcomes guests Farnaz Kaufman, the Director of Global Initiatives at iLEAD Schools and Carolyn Olsen from Fostering Youth Independence (FYI).
Matt begins the show by speaking with Farnaz who has been an educator for over 25 years after serving in the US Military and studying planetary sciences at John Hopkins University. Farnaz quickly discovered that education was her passion and has now been serving the Santa Clarita area including iLEAD Schools for the past eight years. As Director of Global Initiatives, Farnaz focuses on the Dual Language Immersion Program featured at SCVI in addition to building international connections. Farnaz tells Matt that the Dual Language Immersion Program is a great fit that can meet many students needs.
“The beauty of the Dual Language Immersion Program is that it meets both needs,” Farnaz said. “You’re immersing kids in both languages fifty percent of the time and I think that’s what makes our program unique to any other program is that we have actually tapped into funding through the California Department of Education and Ministry of education in Spain and Mexico.”
Later, Matt is joined by Carolyn who is the CEO and Co-Founder of FYI. Carolyn founded FYI because of the needs that foster youth simply do not have access to. Many go into foster youth as young as infancy, often moving from their biological family back into foster care and constantly changing schools. FYI looks to provide these resources so that foster youth can have functioning and meaningful lives
