Senior Center All-Stars — April 22, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Kevin MacDonald, CEO of the SCV Senior Center. Kevin talks about the history of the Senior Center in Santa Clarita, and how it has grown over time to be what it is today. Kevin and Matt also talk about how the Senior Center is actually a non-profit organization, and how the Senior Center is extremely grateful for everyone that helps fund the Senior Center’s great work in the community. Kevin also talks about how the Bellavida Senior Center is celebrating its first birthday, and how the last year has been nothing but blessing after blessing. Kevin is so proud of the new Senior Center and how there is more going on there then ever before. Despite the setbacks that Covid-19 has imposed on them, the SCV Senior Center has been able to keep up almost all of their usual services to keep seniors happy and healthy in their homes. If you or a senior you know needs help during this time, please do not hesitate to call the SCV Senior Center at (661) 259-9444. You can also visit their website by clicking here. They remain dedicated to doing everything they can to help while following the latest guidelines from the CDC and LA County Health Officials. Listen to Kevin’s full interview that begins at the start of the show in the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Jodi Blinn, English Facilitator at SCVi Schools. Jodi teaches English at the 9th and 10th grade levels at SCVi, and Jodi talks about she found her place teaching for SCVi. Jodi moved to Los Angeles from New Orleans and went through a great shift in her life before getting involved at SCVi & iLEAD Schools. Jodi has an incredible passion for teaching, and that is apparent in the projects her and her students do on a yearly basis. Jodi talks about two of the incredible programs she helps her learners participate in during the school year, and how these programs give high school students the opportunity to do something that incorporates all of the skills they have been learning since the beginning of their academic journey. Matt and Jodi play a clip of a poem written and voiced by one of Jodi’s learners, and talk about how that program is a huge motivator for her learners at SCVi. Listen to Jodi’s full interview at the beginning of the second hour of the show.

Our last guest is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR. Kristina calls in each day to give our listeners advice and suggestions on how to manage their mental health. Listen to Kristina’s advice at the end of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
