The Boys and Girls Club  — May 14, 2020

On this episode of Eye On The Valley presented by SCVi & iLEAD Schools, Amber is out, and Matt Watson drives the show today.

Our first guest on the show is Matthew Nelson, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club in Santa Clarita. Matthew shares what the Boys & Girls Club does for kids, young adults, and parents during normal school times. During these times, the Boys & Girls Club has transitioned their services to online delivery methods, and has also been doing wellness calls for everyone who uses their services. The Boys & Girls Club also works hard to connect people to the resources they need to get through these tough times. Matthew is proud of his staff for working so hard, and has kept his ear to the ground for any information that will help him and his staff provide their services in the safest way possible. He also shares how the Boys & Girls Club would love to open back up, but must remain closed a little longer to move ahead. Taking all the precautions necessary, they are moving into Phase 2 along with the rest of the county to prepare to reopen. To find out more about the Boys & Girls Club, check out their website by clicking here to see everything they have to offer. Listen to Matthew’s full interview during the first two segments of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Kristina de Bree, MA, LMFT, EMDR, and she calls in to talk about continuing to manage your anxiety. Kristina provides a list of services people can use to access affordable counseling for those who are on the fence about going to therapy. Kristina encourages people to try therapy and to try to find the therapist that connects with you the most. She also shares her contact information on the air, and tells people to call her if they need anything. Listen to Kristina’s full interview in the third segment of the first hour of the podcast.

Our next guest on the show is Griffin Loch, Director and Writer. Griffin is just 16-years-old but has already released two full-length films, has a third on the way, and won awards for his work. Griffin is focused on film making and is finishing high school in just two years so he can focus on what he loves most. He will be graduating this year from high school at the age of 16. Griffin joins the show to talk about what it’s like to have such a different schedule and path than most of his peers, and how that has helped him grow as a person. Griffin also gives the show his Top 10 Movies of All Time so listen in for an extremely fun interview in the first two segments of the second hour of the podcast.

About SCVi & iLEAD Schools:

“At iLEAD we’ve built a model based on what we believe to be the best of all that is out there. We believe passionately in project-based learning not because it’s a fad but because it goes to the heart of how kids learn. We’ve incorporated technology not as a spiffy add-on but as an organic part of the learning process in the 21st century.

We value and encourage leadership not just as a part of a career track but by instilling in each learner the confidence and character that inspire others.

It’s not unusual that we want our learners to think for themselves. But to do this requires a grounding in the arts, in design and in humanities, and the need to feel at home in the world. For us, “thinking for themselves” is not just about solving problems but about an organic vision of the world they live in and one they will inherit.

Finally, we value the social and emotional development of our learners. We believe there is an implicit, as well as an explicit, curriculum to teach. Our goal is nothing short of learning, to change the world.” Read More…
