Alex and Ellen talk about a handful of topics in the episode, including helping kids cope after divorce and how to let your partner make their own decisions.

Ellen shared her experience after her divorce, where she felt like she had to be strong for her daughters and ended up not being vulnerable herself.

“When I got divorced, my ex husband moved away, so I was a single mom,” said Ellen. I made a decision to be strong for my girls so they could rely on me and that translated into letting go of being vulnerable.

Alex says that he notices with many single moms, that they want to be both mom and dad, so they focus more on the hard strength and lose a lot of the soft open, and vulnerable parts of themselves.

Alex and Ellen also discuss a recent event where Ellen felt disappointment with her husband in his decision to forgo an event he had originally agreed to go to.

“What if you both together sat down and found value in the event, something that inspires you, or lights a fire in you,” said Alex. He said doing this together, as opposed to making the decision for him.

Alex walks her through the discovery that she hadn’t actually let it go like she had said, because she was still expressing disappointment. He encouraged her to let her husband make his own decisions and to try to avoid expressing disappointment in him figuring himself out.

“This is the greatest thing about coaching, when you think you’ve got the game play, after some coaching, you realize there is a whole part of the game you haven’t even played yet!,” said Ellen.
