Trauma and Addiction – November 16, 2020

On this episode of the Insight Treatment Hour, Dr. Trevor Small, Director of Clinical Development at Insight Treatment, welcomes in Rachel Rainne, LMFT, Clinical Director at Insight Treatment, to talk about the relationship between trauma and addiction. Trauma, due to whatever cause, can have a complex relationship with addiction because trauma from a life event can be the very reason that drives us to begin using a harmful substance or engaging in other self-harming coping methods. Rachel and Dr. Small talk very bluntly about how deep trauma can be ingrained in a person, and how that trauma has caused a person to cope through various methods. Rachel begins by talking about her own journey to becoming a therapist, and how she had the used the words “I hate therapists” prior to becoming one herself. Dr. Small and Rachel provide incredible insight to how trauma and addiction are related, and why dealing with both of them is so important to helping a person recover from more than an addiction to a harmful substance or behavior. Taking the next steps into healing the soul is a challenging step, and Rachel shares her expertise on how a person can move forward and overcome the challenge that seems so great. Listen to another amazing conversation full of information on how to help yourself or someone you know who is trying to handle the challenging relationship between trauma and addiction.
