Senior Hour – ‘No One Dies Alone’ At Henry Mayo And The Masters University – January 11, 2023

On this episode of The Senior Hour, hosts Barbara Cochran and Dr. Thomas Polucki welcome in special guests Sandy Weinberg the chaplain supervisor at Henry Mayo Newhall and Dave Caldwell from The Masters University.

Barbara and Dr. Polucki begin by chatting with Sandy who oversees the chaplaincy department, including a staff of five chaplains and all aspects of spiritual care at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital. Sandy is a licensed and ordained minister with more than 10 years of chaplaincy experience in hospice, palliative and hospital healthcare settings. Sandy has introduced the ‘No Person Dies Alone’ program at the hospital which officially launches tomorrow, January 12th.

The volunteer program provides those patients without family members with support and compassion during their final hours. The organization provides end-of-life support including a dying patient’s pain and symptoms, in order to assist patients and their loved ones through the death and dying process by providing emotional, spiritual, and mental needs.

“People who are estranged from family members, or people who have a trauma while they are far from home- maybe on a business trip or on vacation,” Sandy said. “We tell families, their loved one is being taken care of well. All of the attention is on the person in the bed, but we want the family to know that they are not invisible.”

Later, Dave joins the show to discuss some of the upcoming sports and events at The Masters University. Dave mentions the sports streams and how large they have grown for friends and family members to view their athletics. From mens and women’s soccer, volleyball, and basketball, the school offers public admission at a $10 price to watch games in person.
